Adopt a policy on diversity: In drafting this policy, avoid making general commitments to diversity. It’s important to name sexual orientation, gender identity and your commitment to LGBTQ+ communities 

Arrange for LGBTQ+  awareness training for staff and volunteers: It’s a good idea to make this training mandatory or to strongly encourage staff to attend. Sometimes staff who are uncomfortable with LGBTQ+ issues will avoid attending.

Create a welcoming environment: Look for ways to make your reception and counselling rooms more welcoming. For instance, display posters and pamphlets that celebrate diversity, including LGBTQ+ communities.

Inclusive Curriculum: Visibility matters. LGBTQ+ students need to see themselves in their textbooks and in the halls and walls of their schools to feel welcome and included.

Supportive Teachers and Staff: Teachers can be a supportive lifeline to help LGBTQ+ youth at-risk of bullying, discrimination, and violence.

Comprehensive Policies: School boards that pass comprehensive LGBTQ+ policies set clear expectations and authorize all staff to meet their legal obligations and become proactive in creating respectful, welcoming, inclusive, and safe working and learning environments.

Admit if you don’t know what a word means or what language to use: If you aren’t sure what words to use or what to say when talking with your LGBTQ+ friend or relative, ask for direction. 

Lead by example. Don’t be afraid to speak up when other people act in a discriminatory way toward LGBTQ+ people, tell offensive jokes or engage in anti-gay behavior.

Avoid making stereotypes: The stereotypes society places on LGBTQ+ people regarding dress, demeanor, physique and speech are just that: stereotypes, which are by definition oversimplified and often false.

Treat others as you would like to be treated: Actions speak louder than words.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s many “gay” bars were raided and people were starting to fight back 

When a gay bar was raided in New York in 1969 there were riots that followed involving the arrest of 400 people. This is widely known as the the beginning of the gay rights movement.

Until 1969 homosexuality was a crime. It was decriminalized by Pierre Trudeau(prime minister at the time).

In 1969 the federal government added “sexual orientation”  to the Canadian Human Rights Act.

In 1997 the government extended employment benefits such as medical and dental benefits to same sex couples.

In 1999 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that same-sex couples have the same legal rights and responsibilities as heterosexual couples.  

In 2002 many cases appeared in Canadian court stating that the definition of “spouse” under marriage was prejudice against same-sex spouse. At the time, spouse was defined as the union of one man and one woman. 

In 2003 the courts in Ontario and British Columbia struck down their marriage laws as unconstitutional

On July 20, 2005 the Civil Marriage Act legalized same-sex marriage in Canada.
