The books we choose to include in our classroom libraries have a tremendous impact on children’s understanding of the world around them, including the diverse cultures, abilities, languages, ethnicities, and families represented in their classroom community. Rudine Sims Bishop, children’s literature researcher, wrote about children’s books’ ability to serve as “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” for readers. “Mirrors” are those stories that reflect children’s own lives and experiences, “windows” are those that offer students a glimpse into lives and experiences that are different from their own, and “sliding glass doors” are stories where readers can “step into” and become immersed in another’s world and experience.

This collection of resources will be continually updated to support teachers in selecting books that best represent and honor the experiences of the children and families they serve. Consider stories that can act as “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” for the children in your program!

Demystifying Disabilities: What to Know, What to Say, and How to be an Ally

People with disabilities are the world’s largest minority, an estimated 15 percent of the global population. But many of us—disabled and nondisabled alike—don’t know how to act, what to say, or how to be an ally to the disability community. Demystifying Disability is a friendly handbook on the important disability issues you need to know about, including:

• How to appropriately think, talk, and ask about disability
• Recognizing and avoiding ableism (discrimination toward disabled people)
• Practicing good disability etiquette
• Ensuring accessibility becomes your standard practice, from everyday communication to planning special events
• Appreciating disability history and identity
• Identifying and speaking up about disability stereotypes in media

Authored by celebrated disability rights advocate, speaker, and writer Emily Ladau, this practical, intersectional guide offers all readers a welcoming place to understand disability as part of the human experience.

This book introduces the reader to six wonderful kids: Sam, Rishi, Jay, Audrey, Ty and Zara.

The aim of this story is to ensure all kids understand that kids with disability are just like kids everywhere. They love playing games, books, making stuff and being silly. They have things they are good at and things they need to work on. And just like kids everywhere they want to feel safe, loved and included. This book provides the reader with ways they can be more inclusive in their play and encourages the celebration of diversity in all its unique and wonderful forms. Children will come away with a growing understanding that people everywhere have differing abilities, and this only makes the world a more colourful, exciting, diverse and amazing place.
