I think this is the theme because the author keeps giving examples of minor who have to face very harsh times for crimes, they didnt understand they did. I also think that some of the theme was that the sentence that the court are giving to minors are harsh because their brain hasnt fully developed ( Jala Ware )

I think the theme of the text is to keep going even in hard situations. In the text the The Other Wes Moore it states " The fact that sleeping in the living room also allowed her to avoid the haunted bedroom she'd once shared with my father was never mentioned...My mother still tortured herself with what-ifs concerning my fathers death..." I believe the author used his mom as an example to demonstrate what happens when you let rough times get to you.

In the novel Wes always found himself in bad situations because of the choices he made. Since Wes was still young those bad choices were made because he didn't fully know himself. The text, it explains how a stable self image helps make positive decisions.
(Gemima Dernier)

I think the theme of these passages were that there isn’t always going to be someone in your life that you can look up to, this causes you to have to guide yourself and try your best to live your life because you didn’t have anybody to look up to. In absence of something like a father figure you may grow up and think the things that you see are ok to do and you do it and get yourself into trouble because you don’t know right from wrong. You have to mature as you grow and learn as you grow without someone to look up to, learning right from wrong. - Valson Gardner

The other Wes Moore vs how you see yourself

Having self esteem and a sense of pride within yourself can lead to good decision making and can help you keep good relationships. The other Wes Moore states “This was a pride issue for Wes. He had just allowed himself to be punched dead in the face, in front of his friends, by a smaller guy.” with his pride being hurt and his “image” being shattered, for a lack of a better term, caused him to make poor decisions. The text How You See Yourself states “It is important to learn about and be aware of your self-image. This is because a stable self-image is key to a healthy sense of identity. When a person’s self-image is not an accurate reflection of them, trouble can sometimes follow” both themes involve how a person sees themselves and how it can impact them. (Terence)

The Other Wes Moore vs Do Juvenile Killers Deserve Life Behind Bars

Juvenile killers have been given life sentences regarless of their background or age. In some cases this would be illogical because in the event that a 4 year old commits a murder without knowing what they have done they would spend the rest of their life in prison not understanding the cause. In the case of Wes Moore his sentence would be logical because he understands his actions and he proceeded with attempted murder. These themes connect where juveniles commit a murder or attempt it and are sentenced with no consideration of background. In The Other Wes Moore it states "Wes chased after him. As they ran, he and his friend pointed their weapons in Ray’s direction and began taking shots." It also states " Adrenaline was rushing through Wes’s body, followed quickly by fear, but no regret." Wes knew the decision he was making and felt no regret so he would deserve life for murder.

As a person, as a human being, I know that everyone gets lazy. We procrastinate and wanna finish things last minute or not finish it at all. Millions, and I mean, millions have people have been put in this predicament for several years and nothing has been done to change that. Police try to protect the public. If they don't have news to give, they get looked at as if they failed so to save themselves, they ruin someone's life because 'it's easier'. That puts us in a situation where this is no right or wrong. If we let the wrong person go, to 'give them another chance', another person or thousands of people could lose their lives. Meanwhile, if you let someone go and they never do anything criminal for the rest of their lives, that's great. But we live in a world where one person's happiness cannot compare to the 7 billion other people. I believe that yes, some juvenile killers should serve their time, but if you don't put in the work to find out if it was actually them, then you have no right to destroy a life. It's not right if you don't do it the right way.
