Who am I as a social worker this is a question that I've had to think about a lot and it's not an easy question to answer. As people were always growing and we're forever changing based on the things that we learn and the people that are around us. My education and my future work it is greatly influenced by my family and the fact that I want nothing more than for my children to grow up in a world that they can be proud of. I would like to think that both as a social worker and a human being I am kind openhearted and non-judgmental. I like to practice empathy and I genuinely care for those that are around me. While I'm still learning and I'm only at the beginning of my journey I would like to think that those features I have wi;; make sure that my clients feel safe and cared for in my practice and that I'm not going to be doing anything to put them in danger. I believe that finding people’s strengths and helping them through the tough times can make all the difference.

The last two years of this course have been full of so much information All of which is extremely important and will shape my future in this career. Between learning about ACES, Brainstory, Trauma-informed care, learning how to respond to disclosures of sexual violence, and ASIST training. All of these are extremely valuable pieces of information that anyone working in a helping field should have access to. These pieces of training will make all the difference in my interactions with clients going forward making sure that I'm taking the best possible care available to me for that client. Self-care has been drilled into my brain over the last couple of years and well I may forget sometimes that I need to do my self-care remembering that without myself care I will make myself useless as a social worker is so very important. I can almost say that out of all of the things that I have learned self-care due to the fact that without it we can experience burnout is probably one of the most important things to have learned.

I learned about the failure of our sex education, the horrific happenings to the Indigenous populations, and the lack of support for foster children. each of these sources rocked me to my core in one way or another furthering the want andembeddingg the need for me to fight for the rights of others.

Action Canada for Sexual and Health Rights.

I am lucky to be who I am, and I carry a certain amount of privilege being a white female. In this, I know that I have the ability to work on and help to fight against the injustices that face those in our community. I believe in the right to one’s body and the ability to make their own choices in life. I believe that it should not be up to anyone else to decide what anyone else should be doing based on gender, sexuality, or race. I want to make sure that I am doing everything in my realm of capabilities to help the future be a welcoming place for all and stand up when the rights of others are being diminished.

Over the last two years we, have learned about intergenerational trauma and the many ways that it can affect everyone. Unfortunately, many of the populations that we may work with have experienced a great amount of trauma both through the generations and in their own lives and it is important to remember this while working with them. This means being aware of these traumas and the effects they can have on them and working on preventing triggers for them. It is also important to listen to them when they are talking about their needs and prevent yourself from doing what you think is needed while doing everything you can to remain culturally sensitive and aware. I will remain to continue to be person first in my practices going forward.

Throughout my education, in this program, I have been given the opportunity to grow and change through everything that I have learned. This program has given me the tools to work with others while also giving me the tools to help myself in ways I never would have expected. When I started I was shy, withdrawn and honestly did not feel like I was in the right place. Over the last 2 years, I have been able to make new friends and nourish existing relationships with the skills that I have learned as well as learn to set boundaries with other. It was information through the DSM-5 learning more about my own diagnosis that helped me to understand more and find new ways to cope with my conditions that I had never learned through my doctors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). I had found new ways to help keep me focused in class and found the love of crochet which turned out to be a great way for me to practice self-care. I have gone from self-sabotage and running away from anything that I found to be tough to complete a program I never thought I could have done before. I am proud to have made it to where I am and know that I can only continue to grow and achieve more from her on.

I do plan to go back to school and further my education and hopefully one day maybe even achieve my Ph.D. in social work. For now, though I will be taking a year to work in the field as a registered social worker and gain some valuable experience that will be a great benefit for me in my future education. I do not currently know where I will be going to school however, I plan to continue on to become a clinical social worker and be able to work as a therapist. While my goals may change as to the population I may work with I currently hope to one day be a sex therapist and I am looking forward to the journey that will take me there.
