Define and evaluate the concept of transmission.

From what I can understand transmission in music is when you feel a true raw emotion from listening or performing a song. Sometimes it can be spiritual and connect you with a higher presence such as god or it could be just having your mood transcend into something more powerful than just feeling sad or happy. When I heard about this topic I immediately associated getting goosebumps with the definition of transmission. Sometimes music just hits your harder than you could have imagined and makes you feel emotions you didn't know you had or felt. It's one of the greatest things about music and I think truly connects so many different people from all walks of life. Most of the time I think this is more associated with slower songs that are more drown out and meaningful, But I also feel like I could get the same feeling from an upbeat song with a meaning I really resonate with. Overall I think the transmission of a song is unique to you as a person and can make people feel different ways just by listening to different songs at different points in your life.

Do you agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element?

I do agree with Ratliff's arguments on this topic of Transmission. I would have like to have seen more examples and from various genres just so I could really get a feel as to what he was saying but overall the concept was really interesting to learn about. He connected it to a lot of different musicians who had written about this topic and used there quotes which helped me understand the topic from different viewpoints. What is nice is that it's not just a spiritual feeling, you can feel it in the form of different emotions or memories or if you want it can be spiritual. So I think there are options for everyone to stand behind and understand. I always associate music with my emotions and moods so this chapter hit close home to me and made me analyze the different songs I listen to when I'm feeling a certain way. Music truly brings out the best in people and sometimes the worst but all in all Ratliff made the solid argument that it connects us all some way and somehow which is such a unique thing to experience that we should be grateful to have!

Examine at least one musical example in Ratliff’s playlist in detail – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

I am a huge Beatles fan (who isn’t) so when I saw this song on the list I knew I had to choose it to analyze. This song exemplifies transmission in lot of different ways while still being a song lots of people recognize. Even though Lennon is just repeating the name Julia in a slow manner over and over again it allows the listener to really listen to every note and lyric of the song. There's no rush or anxiousness when trying to figure out what he's saying or how he's feeling, he just lays it out there in a very simple melody with easy to relate to and hear lyrics. As Raliff mentioned in the book, Lennon when singing this seems to be conscious about how very little matters except the essential things in life. He’s not thinking about anything else in that moment besides that song which is so powerful. After all Ratliff says “The most human form of music: the carrier of emotion” That's what transmission is all about, emotion. And this song exemplifies throughout the different stages of emotion you can go through and how it doesn't have to have some complex melody it can just be a simple song and lyrics from the heart that make you feel a certain way about someone or something.

Find at least one musical example outside of Ratliff’s playlist and justify its inclusion – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

The Song I chose as my example was “Laughing With” By Regina Spektor. Spektor is one of my favorite artists who I think embodies emotion in a lot of her songs so I Knew she would have several great examples of transmission. I chose this song specifically because it was the first song I had ever heard from her and the one that really hits me hard every time I listen to it. It brings up a topic of God and how no one is laughing at god when something in there life isn't going right such as being poor or in the hospital. But god can be funny sometimes too when life is going right and you do feel happy. Transmission is all about spirituality in some cases and emotion so this song hits both those topics head on. It brings up the topic of a god and how he can make you feel and personally I feel him when listening to this song so it has a close place in my heart for me. Music is meant to make you feel things and every time I hear this at first I feel this sense of sadness and being alone but then it transitions into the more upbeat chorus where god is laughing with us and is there for us which then changes my emotions to feeling more protected and closer to him. this is all about what Transmission is. Feeling the lyrics and the emotion from the artist and connecting it to your own life which is so special.

"Which is to say: music coheres and resolves according to lots of intrinsic rules-so many that we tend to call it a 'Language'." pg.53

I have always thought of music as its own language because no matter where you are from or your background we can all relate or appreciate music in a universal way which is unlike anything else. This quote justified that fact for me so I was really excited to see it placed in this chapter specifically. You don't have to have words to feel emotion thats why music is so amazing even if you don't understand the words it can still make you feel something or relate to some aspect of your life. That's what Transmission is all about! The feeling music gives you no matter what is being said or if you understand it or not you still feel a connection which is incredible to think about.

"When you have a great gift in music and a set great amount of energy toward maintaining and developing it--when you have dedicated your life to an idea of excellence and then self-preservation--then you are practicing a form of transmission every time you play." pg. 55

I love this quote and it really stood out to me when describing what transmission really is. I have always had music be a part of my life in some shape or form and know the exact feeling he is talking about, so to finally relate it to a specific word is so cool to think about. Music is all about the emotion and effort you put into performing it or even listening to it. You can experience so much more of life when you let music in and that feeling of performing a piece and making other people feel a that same way is an even better. Its something we should all being practicing when performing!

I decided to choose this version of Juila because when I found it I think it embodied exactly what Ratliff was saying. This is the more stripped down version with Just John Lennon and his guitar which I think makes it more personal and meaningful. You can fully hear every aspect and in his voice and when he changes tones which is just a really powerful thing that think I might enjoy better than the other version.

I had to add the music video for this because I think it portrays the song beautifully especially with the drawings in the background that paint the scene. She is the only thing in color of a world in black and white but then when she starts playing the piano its blue with clouds on it and the tone of the song shifts to try and be a little more uplifting as the colors come in.

I decided the other image I wanted to use was of a musician performing a song that really means something to them. This is Justin Bieber singing his song 'Purpose' and clearly he is very attached to the song emotionally and you can see and hear that when he sang this song live. Its an amazing experince to see an artist perform with such raw emotion especially when its a song that is very meaningful to them, which I think is the point of what Transmission is in music.
pic creds. http://wildoutghtv.com/justin-bieber-cries-onstage-during-emotional-purpose-performance/
