Psychedelia in the 60's

Psychedelic music in the late 60's was very popular. Psychedelic music was influenced by the use of LSD and other psychedelics like psilocybin. The effects of these drugs, eventually led to psychedelic music, to what it seems like, enhance the "trip". This can also be seen in much of the art of the late 60's. Much of it is very colorful and packed with things to look at. A major feature of psychedelic music is its elaborate production of the guitar sound. It uses many effects like reverb, and in-studio effects to produce a sort of weird or "trippy" sound.

This is one of Cage the Elephant's more popular songs. The vocal's on the track are a little distorted and have a fuzz added to it. It makes it sound a little more grungy and older, because of the lower quality mics in the late 60's. The video is also very psychedelia influenced, and it is easy to see why. There are many different colors, and distortions that happen within the video.

Around :40 seconds in the video, you hear the guitar for the chorus. This has a large amount of reverb added on it it and also uses the whammy bar. This creates a trippy and wavy sound during the chorus. This is a common sound to hear in psychedelic music. Around 2:13 in the song it cuts to another part of the song which was common in psychedelic music.

One of the easy things to spot is the guitar. It has a lot of fuzz and sounds grungy which was a common characteristic of psychedelic music. The vocals in the song are very soft and relaxing in my opinion. They remind me of the calmness in the beginning of "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. The last thing I could find, was at 2:45 there are "ahhhs" that sound very soft and pleasant that you would find in a 60's psychedelic song.
