1. Read Part 3 Reframing Organizations Pay special attention to Maslow, MacGregor's X and Y, Theories for Action, Emotional Intelligence, Outline Basic Human Resource Strategies (p142 4th edition). Where is your organization succeeding and failing according to the chart on this page?
   
   

2. Start reading your additional book (refer to the options found in the Syllabus or the Group assignment doc)
   
   

3. Create a simple map that identifies the organizational problem (example Exhibit 2.2 “Systems model with delay” in RO p37). This forces you to think abstractly about your issue.
   
   

4. Modify the first paper based on partner and professor feedback. Apply advice on the remaining papers (you will receive less feedback after the first paper). Feel free to work ahead. (Dr. Johnson will return all papers within 2 weeks)

The Structural Perspective Bolman and Deal 

1. Look at your case and see what structural problems you can uncover.  What structure existed? (Mintzberg might help here.)  Did the structure fit the situation?  What were the apparent goals associated with the incident?  What was the role of each participant?  How were responsibilities delineated?   Are roles clear or overlapping?  Are policies clear?  Were any policies violated?   Did supervisors hold people accountable? Did the environment change?  What kind of task linkages existed?  Does work space play a role in the problem? Is strategic planning and implementing a priority? Could technology be leveraged more effectively? 

2. Determine what could have been done to resolve the structural problems and thus avoid the conflict.  Did you or someone else fail to adhere to the structure?   What is the hierarchy of authority?   Was authority an issue here?   Who had it?  How was it carried out?  Were problems caused by an inadequate coordination strategy? How do the issues with structure reveal human fallibility and our need for God’s completeness?
