Julius The Baby of the World

Julius the baby of the world by Kevin Henkes is a perfect read aloud to share with children who may be facing challenges about sibling rivalry. Lily is a young mouse who thinks that everything about her new baby brother is awful. She does not like to be around him at all until her cousin comes over and criticizes her younger brother Julius. From that point Lily takes it into her hands to stick up for her brother and starts to see him in a new perspective. I believe that this story showcases the problems that younger children face when introduced to new siblings very well.

Owen by Kevin Henkes is a story about a young mouse connection with his fuzzy yellow blanket. All throughout the story Owen's parents are trying to come up with different ways so that Owen can leave his blanket behind. This story humor allows children to relate to Owen, if they too have something that is very special to them.

Put me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire is a humorous text about a leopard who yearns so badly to be a part of the zoo. As the story develops he takes two young children around with him showing them all he can do with his spots. As he changes his colors of his spots, he can also change the colors of the objects around him by colliding his spots with the objects. This is a great text to introduce colors to young children and students follow along with the rhythmic style. This story is part of the Dr. Seuss collection.

Charlie's ABC by Nona Hatay is an alphabet book that contains illustrations that are photographed. The author uses objects or actions of Charlie to show the different letters of the alphabet. In other words, the author uses real-life scenarios in order to present the letters of the alphabet all revolving around what Charlie is doing or seeing. I believe that this is a good way to present an alphabet book to children because the real life photographs allows them to familiarize with objects that are used around them in everyday life. Making it easier for them to make the connection with the letter and the object.

Little Tug by Stephen Savage is a picture book about a personified object known as Little Tug. Little Tug, the protagonist, helps other ships in the harbor carry out their jobs. The book explains many ways in which Little Tug is needed on the harbor and also how the other boats help him when he is tired. This story shows children how important jobs can be and also shows children the idea of caring for others as the other ships helped Little Tug fulfill his duties.

What a Scare, Jesse Bear

What a Scare, Jesse Bear by Nancy White Carlstrom is a story about a young bear celebrating Halloween with his family. At first Jesse is scared of the holiday and explains how he was first scared of his own monster costume but after participating in activities such as trick-or-treating and dressing up he learns to enjoy the holiday. The author uses a rhythmic style of writing. This style helps engage younger children because it is a fun way to deliver a story where children can follow along. I believe that with Halloween coming up, many young children may fear the holiday and relate to Jesse Bear. It is a fun way to show that the holiday is not just filled with scary elements.

The Lion and the Mouse

The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney is a wordless story that falls under the category of a fable. As one is flipping through the pages of this book they can see how the illustrations work together with the animal sounds to show what the meaning of the lesson is. As one continues to flip the pages, the illustrations help show that the lesson of the story is gratification, "no act of kindness is ever wasted" (Pinkney, Jerry). The mouse was let free by the king of the jungle (the lion) and in return when a net trapped the lion, the mouse came to the recuse and chewed the rope to set the lion free. I believe that this story lesson is good to introduce early on to students because it is important to acknowledge kindness towards others, especially with preschoolers.

The Hello Goodbye Window by Norton Juster is a contemporary realistic fiction that deals with family and family diversity. In this story a little girl tells us about a special window at her grandparents house. She tells us many reasons why she loves the window (for example, tapping the window when outside or ducking down so her grandparents don't see her) and some reasons why it makes her sad (for example, when she sees someone coming to take her back home). The window is the first and last thing that she sees when coming to or leaving her grandparents house, hence the hello and goodbye window. The theme of the book is a special and loving relationship between the little girl and her grandparents. Children can relate to the story by connecting to a loving relationship they have with someone.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin and John Archambault is a classic that many of my students have enjoyed in the past.

It's okay to be Different by Todd Parr is an excellent book to introduce students to differences within people around them. This book shows young students in a friendly way that everyone is different and that it is okay. Students learn that it is okay to talk about your feelings and helps students build confidence within themselves. It allows students to explore all parts of their individuality! Great to share, especially if conflicts arise in the classrooms about differences within students.
