The New Year’s dinner is the heart of all the preparations. Days before, everyone talks about the menu, shares what they would like to eat, and the kitchen slowly becomes the busiest place in the house. Even though the dishes may change from family to family, what matters most is sitting around the table together and welcoming the new year as one.

In my family, everyone has their own responsibility on New Year’s Eve. Someone makes the salad, someone focuses on the main dish, and someone sets the table. The TV is usually on with entertainment shows, and even if there’s no snow outside, the festive spirit fills the entire home. As the time gets closer, the excitement builds—just like waiting for the call to break the fast during Ramadan, here we wait for the countdown. A few minutes before midnight, everyone gathers around the table, plates are filled, and the first bite of the new year is shared with loved ones.

For me, the most special part of the New Year’s dinner is the feeling of saying goodbye to the past year while stepping into a new one with hope, all together. Since I was little, this night has reminded me of the warmth of home, the value of being together, and how precious small moments can be. I still remember one New Year’s Eve so clearly: just a few minutes before the countdown, the power went out. We all looked at each other in the dark and then burst into laughter. İn Ramadan we feast from the sunrise to the sunset, in the day we have two meals. Starting by the meal we have just before the sunrise. The whole family wakes up and we all start to set the table and the food together. Those moments with our families are really precious for us. During the day we don't eat or drink anything which makes us really understand the feelings of the hungry people.

After the sunset our second meal gets it's time. Before the sunset the family members start to Cook the delicious meals, preparing desserts and setting the table all together. We even invite other families, friends and sometimes even

A year ago, during Christmas Eve, one of the twelve traditional dishes on the table was beetroot soup with dumplings, known as barszcz with uszka. The deep red, clear soup was warm and aromatic, made from fermented beetroots and delicate spices. Inside the small dumplings was a filling of forest mushrooms, giving the dish a rich and comforting flavor. Served at the beginning of the festive meal, barszcz with uszka created a calm, magical atmosphere and brought everyone together at the table, reminding us of tradition, family, and the spirit of Christmas.

In Türkiye, when Ramadan arrives, the atmosphere in the city changes. Life during the day becomes a little quieter, but as evening approaches the streets become more lively. Long lines form in front of bakeries for traditional Ramadan bread, and the smell of food spreads from homes while everyone waits for iftar time.

I clearly remember one Ramadan evening. The sun was about to set and the sky had turned orange. Everyone was waiting for the moment of iftar. On the table there was soup, some bread, dates, and a few dishes. Actually, the food on the table was not the most important thing; the important part was the feeling of waiting.

The minutes felt like they were moving slowly. The television was on, showing the time of the evening call to prayer, and everyone was quietly waiting for that moment. When the call to prayer was finally heard, the first sip of water felt very refreshing. After fasting all day, even a small bite of food felt very valuable.

After iftar, the streets would become lively again. Some people would go for a walk, some would go to the mosque, and others would meet with friends. The calm but lively atmosphere of Ramadan evenings is something I always remember.
