reflective writing (what assessment criteria i want to develop)

in this fmp i would like to develop my realisation the most. i find that my research and understanding of what i make or wan to create is usually let down by my realised outcomes. for example, i put a lot of time into planning and iterising my wip show piece (a complex system designed to track subjects gait and determine their mood based off of their footsteps) but the final outcome looked a little messy and haphazard which wasn't what i was going for. i want to use materials i find around in the environment (which i already do a lot of) but also go out of my way to get a specific material or product to use in my works so that the materiality and concept work together conjunctively as well as looking good. therefore over this fmp i'll focus on using better materials (while also considering WHY those materials contextually) and spending more time carefully making the final result instead of being a little messy like i usually am. i also want to develop my communication and how i make other peoplee understand my work. for example, in the wip show i found it difficult to explain to the viewers that they had to go to the second bit of my piece and that they go together. using some form of communication which isnt my own voice is very important as i dont want to have to hang around my piece until i have to explain it. i dont necassarily want the work to be self-explanatory but i want to be able to communicate the meaning behind it/how it works better, perhaps using text, lines on the floor, etc. overall, i would like to develop my techniques more when making to encourage a more polished result of work by going into the workshops (especially the print workshop) and make sure that the work makes sense without me having to be there to explain it.

i started off looking into random things i found interesting and looking at this stuff along with all my work in my portfolio, i realised that i always centre the audience and the impact the work can have; making people think twice or 'tricking' them. after seeing a shadow which looked like an arm extending a gun, i realised that these ideas could all be combined into the idea of illusions and looked into the ames window illusion. after this, i immediately thought about purely optical illusions and researched these using jstor documents and old scientific research. i saw that most of this research was done from around the 1930s to the 60s and theres little since. this begged questions about if optical illusions have lost their 'magic' and that people are just simply uninterested nowadays, or that all of them have been 'come up with' and theres no other possibilities of optical illusions, which seems strange and surely impossible. i then started looking at artists who use objects and technology to 'trick' their viewers, like peter campus' three transitions and stefan vizan.

i then started to question illusion in a broader sense, thinking about what qualifies as an illusion. this led me to researching shadow and moving image, seeing how i could trick viewers using these methods and technology.

while researching shadow and light for another project, i saw a exhibition which looked cool, but then discovered that it was from an ai prompt. i had been tricked myself! i also got tricked with a video of will smith which i thought was comparing last years ai capabilities with nowadays; but it was just will smith.

being tricked by ai made me question if ai itself can be used as a tool to trick someone.

im going to take these ideas of what is an illusion and making the audience think twice, or tricking them into fmp. something which i might leave behind is ideas of physical, drawn optical illusions as i dont feel i can progress too far with this, i think i would reach a dead-end fairly early on if it was my sole focus.
