The song “baby it’s cold outside” is coercion and lack of consent, in my opinion. The lady in the song is so worried about others in her life because in that era, it was socially unacceptable for women to sleep with men they are not married to. It would be a bad look if she stayed longer and then had been seen leaving his house late at night. I also believe that all her responses in the song are just big excuses for the fact that she simply does not want to stay. She keeps saying no “The answer is no no no” and then he begins to make her feel guilty. These are all things a person who does not know how to conduct themselves sexually do. They are the harasser but act like a victim. I do not think she is giving into any of her personal desires all throughout the song and even if she thinks she is, from an outsider point of view she is not. She is clearly getting convinced to do something she does not want to do but it is cold outside, and he is good at convincing her. “Say, what’s in this drink” because he said he poured it in the last line, and she might believe he drugged her. I think she had the final drink and thought to herself “I feel weird, what’s going on”. The man had been trying to convince her for a while and then she coincidently feels weird because of the drink? I do not believe it’s a coincidence. At the end of the song, she gives in and starts singing with him because she had that drink and because he had convinced her for so long. I believe it is slut shaming and it’s still present in some cultures, but not as much as back then when they made a Christmas song centered around sexual harassment and slut-shaming. Nowadays it is normal for women to sleep with multiple men, before marriage or not even get married at all. Back then, it would not have worked. Slut shaming has gotten better, but we still need to improve as a society. I personally do not think that this song should completely be removed from the airwaves. There are so many songs that get censored and put on the air, one’s that talk about drugs and sex and other topics as well as ones that are filled with curse words. I think that, in this case, the song should be replaced by the clean version Michael Buble and Idina Menzel have recreated. They made the song sound less controversial and more kid friendly.

I believe that when the song was released back in the late '40's, that there was no intent to have any coercion or lack of consent. The woman in the song is more concerned about what others will think of her because she doesn't want to be shunned or judged for her actions. I think that if she was in any sort of danger, the theme and sound of the song would be much, much different. What this tells us about society is that clearly, we are living in a very different time - some things that were tolerated or seen differently then, are much different now. I believe that this entire song is her inner struggle's about staying. It seems that she really wants to stay, but wants to try and find any excuse to leave, although when given a reason to from the male in the song, it gives her more reason to do so. I believe that at the end of the song she gives into her own desires. I believe when she say "Whats in the drink" I think she is asking just that - vodka? rum?nothing? who knows. This is why she is asking.

Slut-shaming is very much alive and well - obviously MUCH more in today's society than ever before. I am not saying that the world has gone "soft", rather, I think the world has gotten tougher, or meaner. Social media has added so much negativity to this world, this is where a majority of bullying and shaming has been taken place these days.

I do think it's a good idea to have the song banned from the air. It's something that's up to debate whether it is appropriate or not, but its not a debate society needs to have. There is much, much more going on in the world that needs to be given attention, and if taking the song off the air stops it from being something to spend time on, take it off. If someone really wants to listen to it, they will download it.

After listening to this song that I haven't heard since I was probably 13. The song was released back in the late 40's that is when the original one came out before all the remakes , however the song does of a lack of consent and in my opinion it is based on what others think of the women whom as singing the song. She hide behind her music because she didn't want to be judged, shammed and bashed for her actions. I think that is she was in damage or hurting that the meaning/ sound of her song would be different. The lyrics are very upsetting and mind blowing when you listen to them closely especially when she says..
"What's in this drink?" This is definitely a turning point that makes it sound sinister. The lyrics show sexual harassment and shocking words that make your head turn as to why they made a song like this, is it real? or it is just something they didn't think through maybe they didn't even mean to make the song sound bad, who knows to be honest. I do believe that slut- shamming and bullying is a big impact on today's society as it was back than. A lot of people use the media to hide be hide the screen to slut shame others just of fun or their own needs. The song is definitely coercion. He keeps referencing the snow and the blizzard to make her stay. Some might say that she is consenting in the lyrics because every time he says “look outside” she keeps saying “one more drink”. The line that concerns me most is the one where she says “what’s in this drink?” Makes you wonder did he spike it with something?

• Why is she worried about the “others” in her life more so than her own feelings? For example, her sister who will be “suspicious, her father who will be “pacing the floor, the maiden aunt whose “mind is vicious” and the nosy neighbour who might think “she is off doing something improper.” What does this tell us about society?

That we care more about what other people think but I think it was simply her way of trying to get out by saying all of these people are concerned about me so I better go. Sometimes we use excuses to try and avoid ways of sending a message the other person is not willing to hear.

I think it is about her inner struggles about staying, she likes him but at the same time does not want to give him the impression she is easy and that she was there only for one thing.

I wonder the same thing; you can take this so many ways but near the end she still seems to be coherent so I would say perhaps not having her whit’s about her and may lead to bad decisions. Maybe she does not drink that often so is just curious.

Yes I do,I think she is making up excuses but keeps saying “just one more drink”

• At the end of the song when both the male and female sing lyrics together and she gives in, does she give in to the male or does she give in to her own desires?

I think a bit of both, she has realized the storm has gotten worse and the thoughts running through her head of all the concerned people were not perhaps as bad as she thought and maybe the alcohol has taken over her senses to relax a little.

• Looking through your current lens of today, is Slut-shaming is alive and well? Explain and provide an example.

Yes, and No, it really lies with who and when and how often. There are some of my friends who are just rude, if you have ever read The Bro Code, there is stuff in there that makes your head shake it refers to guys who are all about themselves. If they talk about sexual experiences and it happens with multiple guys at different times and one girl then that is where our generation gets a perspective that the girl is easy and often are not very mice about it. High school is where I saw this the most.

When you take away the sounds and just read the lyrics to the song “Baby its cold outside” it definitely seems like it has ties to coercion. The song deceives you in a way by giving you the perception that it is a friendly, duet-type song. When you dig down deeper into the lyrics you start to feel like the male in the song is trying to force the female to stay, although she is pleading and giving him many reasons why she has to go.

I believe the woman in the song was simply worried about being out too long and being perceived as a woman that sleeps around. Back in that era when this song was created it was not a common thing for females to be sleeping around like that, it was much more frowned upon rather than how society would react today.

Once again back in that era it was not perceived as a “sexy” or “hot” for a female to be sleeping around. I believe the lady did not want this man to think she was associated with being that type of woman. It was not common to be having intercourse with people you were not dating yet back then. She is definitely fighting with her inner self because she wants to stay, but she does not want to be that type of lady.

The woman is definitely trying to find a good enough excuse to blame her desires on. She is most likely doing this because she knows that she will end up giving up strictly our of desire for this man.

I believe the lady in the song gives into her own desires at the end of the song. The whole time she had wanted to stay, and then the man finally coerced her enough to gives up on her own values by staying.

I do think there are still males that would perceive women who sleep around as sluts and look down on them for that. However, I also believe that nowadays we as a society are more accepting of all people and how they want to express themselves. If you want to express yourself by sleeping with hundreds of people, then I’m sure there is a group in 2020 supporting your every decision. One example I can think of regarding to this topic would be the "slutwalk," hosted by Amber Rose. This is an event calling for the end of "slut-shaming"

I have heard this song many times around the holiday season in my life. However I never paid much attention to the words of the song until the on air ban occurred. After I becoming aware of the on air ban due to the lyrics it became clear to me why the song was banned on air. This song definitely leaves listeners wondering how the final decision in the song was made and wether it was her own decision or a coerced decision. Based on the words in the song listeners could be lead to believe she was coerced or that she was debating here on decision. The words "say what is in this drink" caught my attention and the attention of many because hearing that line in the song leads one to believe the drink is laced with something to impair he judgment and or subdue her. Going forward the question we must ask our selfs as a society and as a country is what was the intent of the writer and the song? What happens to songs like this once discovered and how do we deal with the song in such a way thats not erasing them from history but instead just removing the song and or the specific lyrics from the yearly holiday season? When writing and or producing a song should one be restricted to the lyrics they can use? Ultimately based on the words of the song I am lead to believe it's her own decision but I nor we know for sure wether it's her own decision to stay or not. It is coercion and the man is trying to force the woman stay even though she keeps telling him that she has got to go.
She is worried about the “others” in her life. In the era that the song was released it in it was deemed inappropriate for a woman to spend the night with a man. Women were not seen as an equal to a men if a man were to do it they would not get any backlash, while society would make a big deal for a woman as it is scandalous behaviour.

I am not sure if she what she is referencing to by asking “what’s in this drink” because it could be just out of curiosity to find out what is she drinking, or it could also be for her being drugged. As they have been drinking before and she said she would stay for half a drink more, and after agreeing it would be the drink didn’t taste or feel the same as before.
I think she does want to stay as she did agree to another drink and when she is giving reason as to why she should leave is because of what the other would think of her.
I think she gave into both the male and her own desire as it took her a lot of pressure from the guy and overcoming the thought of what other would think for her to stay.
Slut-shaming is alive and well. An example of this would be a Toronto Police officer during a lecture said that women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to get victimized. Another example of this would be the song WAP by Cardi B and Megan thee Stallion being criticized for vulgar. They are just rapping about their own sexual encounter, but when male rappers like Future, Travis Scott, the Migos etc. rap about their sexual encounters media doesn’t even care.
I do not think this song should be removed from airwaves, as we have heard a lot worse songs. In 2013, U.O.E.N.O by Rocko Ft. Rick Ross and Future was being played radio when it first came out. It contained the lyric:
“Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it
I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it”
After this lyric Rick Ross did receive some backlash and he lost his Reebok deal over it, but noting major happened. He was not cancelled or anything, this song remains on YouTube and music streaming services for people to listen. If a song like that can be played, I do not see a problem as to why this song should not be played.

I believe that she is trying to blame her her behaviour on the alcohol. The man responded by saying that there is no cabs out there, so I believe that she was drunk not able to drive. Now, since she has not left yet, I feel as she is saying to herself that she can just blame her behaviour on the alcohol.
I believe deep down she does want to stay because she could have left if she really and truly wanted to, but since she ended up staying in the end, she must have not minded staying.
I believe she gives into the male because he did a lot of convincing. After everything she said, the man still replied to everything, convincing her into staying meaning that she gave into the man.
Yes, I believe slut shaming is still alive to this day. I see it happen constantly on social media. Women to see other women out with maybe with different men get slut shamed all the time, because one of them see the girl as a slut because she might hook up with more than one guy. The other women might then feel offended.
I believe this song does not need to be removed from airwaves. Although the song can be classified as "inappropriate" the song does not have any swearing or talk about anything to inappropriate. Currently I know that there is far way worse music out there that could make this song look very clean.

According to me, Slut shaming still alive and we can discuss various incidents how it's still alive. In last two years, I saw lot of incidents regarding the slut shaming in Bollywood industry. If we talk about incident happened between Tanushree Dutta and Nana Patekar, that is the exact example of the slut shaming.

We can't set any ideal by removing just one song. Because that is not the only song who is showing this thing. I believe it is more of a song about a lack of consent. He never was trying to use force or threats to make her stay. He was more so repeating himself over and over for her to stay. She never said yes, therefore, it was more of a lack of consent.

For example, her sister who will be "suspicious, her father who will be "pacing the floor, the maiden aunt whose "mind is vicious" and the nosy neighbour who might think "she is off doing something improper." What does this tell us about society?

I believe she was worried about the opinions on others because unfortunately, society and the media have made it out that we need to be socially accepted to succeed. She is concerned about her image; she knows it may look bad for her to stay at the opposite sex house and fears what others may think or say.

I believe she is talking about her inner struggles. I feel as though we live in a society where we are continually trying to please people. I believe she is trying to say how she has little say and does not want to give consent to this man, and she is worried for herself.

As I stated above, I think she feels less powerful than the man in this situation. I believe the whole time she was worried about being with this man and then realizes because he wanted her to stay so much, he may have drugged her to force her to stay no matter what.

No, I do not think she wants to stay. I don't think she ever wanted to stay and was put in a horrible situation.

No, I do not think she gives in to her desires. I feel as though she just gives up and realizes she is there to stay. It is sad because this happens in life, and this is another reason why the #MeToo movement was created. This man has made her feel trapped and so uncomfortable, she eventually just caves and stays in a situation she does not want to be in but feels obligated to be.

Slut-shaming is alive and well but I think it is getting better over time. We have many women, such as Emma Watson who are continually trying to fight for equality.

No, I do not believe this song should be removed from the airwaves. If anything, this song should be an eye-opening lesson for women and men. Situations like this where you feel pressured by someone to do something you don't want to do happens all the time. As a society, we need to re-evaluate situations like this and take a stand together to show it is not okay.
