"Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble." by Malika Ali

I would like to remind people that even though all seems hopeless right now, I am always the optimist and feel that we WILL "autocorrect" and get back on course. We just have to continue to be in it, be advocates for ourselves and always push for change. This is a monumental moment we're living in and it will only be wholly evident through the passage of time. Then we must ask ourselves, "What did I do to make things better? How did I contribute to make our world a better place?"

I've been thinking about this in terms of generations. What happened before my lifetime, during, and will be kids' generation of change. I have been thinking about that it has been not a steady progress forward. It has shifted between times of progress and and regression. Racism is consistent across institutions. It is felt on a personal level, but we are all complicit in the structures of all institutions. We all have to collectively be aware and speak up against the small moments that lead to advantages of some and the oppression of others.

To me this tweet is about mindfulness, breathing and centering each and every day. When I feel balanced and in the moment I find that I am able to channel my privilege, energy and anxiety toward supporting leaders, teachers and families through the complexities that present themselves during this time of multiple pandemics that are disproportionately impacting different groups of people. When I am unfocused and not centered I find myself clenching; expecting others to do things, disappointed in others behaviors, worried about the future, or running in circles. To me John Lewis represents the power we each have to be change agents regardless of our circumstances and that it’s easy to make change when things are going well, but much more important to overcome when things are rocky and uncertain.

I think it makes me think about the importance of pacing. I often approach everything from the lens of urgency and want to make a change or have an impact quickly. I like the image of ". Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. " is helpful way to ground ourselves in all aspects of life right now.

As we try to remind our teachers to remain optimistic, I hope we, too, operate from that place. Our greatest leaders had to cultivate hope and faith daily through struggles that truly were marathons, so there is so much we can learn from the practice of patient perseverance in the direction of righteous goals. I hope to practice conjuring hope and optimism daily in this work with my team, colleagues, and community

It makes me sad to recognize that we're living in a time with no Rep. John Lewis. I know his legacy lives on and his words & actions continue to guide and inspire our generation, but still my sense of hope and courage feels dimmer right now. I wonder what "good trouble" can look like in our field, our org, our roles. I'm curious if/how I can utilize my positional privilege to make real, lasting, positive change in our schools and in our society.
