The Condition of Sense of Accomplishment recognizes effort, perseverance, and citizenship as signs of a student’s success. Educators have traditionally used a narrow view of accomplishment that refers to academic achievement, innate ability, or who is “best in the class.” Sense of Accomplishment, however, is viewed in terms of personal growth and effort, not just through measurable outcomes and countable successes. Taking time to recognize and support students’ efforts can help motivate them to persevere through difficult tasks, creating an appreciation for hard work and dedication.

My favorite way to celebrate student accomplishments is through college, job, scholarship or other types of recommendations. It gives me chance sit down and reflect and really tell the story about everything that makes that kid awesome. Often when I speak with a student to prep to write recommendation, I find out even more about that student that I didn't know. But again, I enjoy telling the whole story about the whole student and really detailing what is notable and great about him/her.

Whenever a student/group has an outstanding response, writing, quiz grade, or the like, they are awarded a number of Babula Bucks (purple dollars with my picture). Classes worked collaboratively at the start of he year to create their own menus of what could be "purchased," ranging from candy to extra credit to a pizza party. Lower cost items are designed to be instantly gratifying and individual, while higher cost require students to work together to save their dollars.

I try to recognize my students in many different ways. For example, each morning I check Genesis to determine whether there are any student birthdays on that particular day. If so, I wish that student a "Happy Birthday" and give him or her a small gift. In addition, whenever we have a major assessment in one of my classes, I inform my students that if the class average is 75 or above, then I will bring in snacks for everybody. In my AP Statistics classes, I hold a dinner banquet in July for all students who earn a "5" or a "4" on the AP Exam. I believe that these types of recognition help to motivate my students to succeed.

Funny this was the question today...My students in Concepts Reading participated in a year long project called "Write Brain Books." Students learned the process of how to write and publish a children's book. In groups, they published books, which were sent back to us as hardbacks, including dedications, their pictures and bios. Today we went to Barton, and read to second and third graders, and students lead discussions with the kids. Of course a field trip (and pizza after) was an incentive, but they did a fantastic job all around. Students donated their books to each individual classroom library.

For example, last year we went to Madrid, Toledo and Sevilla. This year we are going to Peru. Every year students in Spanish 2 Honors go to Cuba Libre to practice using the language to order food and eat the food after they've learned about Cuba. The picture below was taken in Toledo, Spain.

I instituted this for the fourth marking period to try and get students motivated to complete their assignments. The students have been working very hard to achieve success each week and love putting their name on the board. We also celebrate any success the students incur at any time. They are happy to share their successes and accomplishments. We also celebrate any successes they have earned in other classes and the need to complete works to feel empowered in the course.

For volleyball, after every game and/or practice, we gave out a mint to one JV and one Varsity player. This gave an opportunity to celebrate every player over the course of the season. Sometimes it was based on effort and other times on performance. Sometimes it was based on action on the court and at times things done off the court. This was a great way to focus, even after a tough loss, to end on a good note. We would say what the mint was for and then give it to the kid. I also loved to see the players cheer for each other when mints were awarded.

I am thinking about doing this next year in class. It is a way to recognize improvement and also consistent good work and relatively inexpensive.

Students are expected to share their observations of performance and presentation in a positive and constructive way.

I recognize effort and growth all the time through verbal praise as a group and also individually. I am able to celebrate growth more specifically when I review students' individual audition results with them to explain how they have grown over the course of the year. In addition, I make a point of praising students individually about their citizenship and encouraging them to stay true to themselves. A more public way of celebrating students' effort, citizenship, and growth is through Night of Stars and the senior awards at the Spring Concert (see attached video starting at about 1:40).

One non-traditional way I recognize student accomplishment and growth is through a mentor model wherein I try to create an environment in which older students are constantly trying to recognize younger students for their efforts. One way is by creating strategic pairings of young and old students to create the conditions necessary to pass on information, as well as give younger students feedback from their peers in addition to their teacher. Older students also receive numerous awards at the spring concert which younger students can then be inspired to strive for. -Burjis Cooper
