The first one was in September 2010 which was a magnitude of 7.1 and was close to Darfield.   This was done along the fault lines west of the city beneath the Canterbury Plains. 

Liquefaction: Liquefaction and ground deformation resulted in a great deal of damage. measuring the energy the earthquake released. Every whole number on the scale is ten times the previous number, so a level 7 earthquake is ten 
times stronger than a level 6 and one hundred times stronger than a level 5. We don’t usually feel 
earthquakes less than 3 on the Richter scale.

When an earthquake hits the cement turns to water underneath and then makes the concrete ground collapse.

The first was 7.1 and struck bad. The second was 6.3 but the ground was still weak and it collapsed buildings and damaged many roads and killed  185 people. This was because the ground still was very weak from the previous earthquake.

The Richter Scale colors are different because on how big and deep it was. So a level 7 one is 10 times stronger that the level 6 one and 100 times stronger than the level 5 one. The first factor was that the fault lines were very solid.
