Science needs base to study and research, it needs a initiation and common sense does that. Our common sense pops out different ideas on which science act. It's a different matter that the final result shows prevalence of science is more. In fact we all knows only imagination couldn't succeed, it need action to give meaning. Statement shouldn't be as science prevail over common sense or common sense prevail over science, science and common sense collectively prevails over reasoning. Both are head and tail to result, equally significant for gaining result.

Thank you
Adity Sah.

Science Prevails over Common-Sense

I won't cite Popper, Quine, Strauss in justifying the statement; because I don't know if I am supposed to or not- but I must confess: I have borrowed some insights from these esteem learned people- even if I haven't cited them.

Science constitutes two things: 1. a particular methodology, 2. a particular type of knowledge. It is a known fact that science isn't obsolete: it is not a dogma. All scientific knowledge is prone to improvement or demolition. For example, the gravitational "what" given by Newton was further enhanced by the "how" by Einstein's non-euclidean geodesic space-time curvature. Another example of further improvements lies in the methodology of calculating the value of pi. The way of calculating pi, from creating poly-numerous Hexagons and circles, was improved by Newton's calculus. Furthermore, there are instances when science builds up from other discoveries: Newton used the Pascal triangle to create the binomial theorem- the list continues. However, we can gather two things from these examples: scientific knowledge isn't absolute and isn't staunched: it is capable of improvements and demolition too: for example, the Plotomy model of solar-system was demolished by Gallileo's model of the solar system, or, how the Bergsonion understanding of time was demolished by Einstein.

No scientific knowledge should be held in reverence as they are prone to be disproved or improved. Science has a methodology that follows two logical methods: empirical and rational. I won't discuss the nature of these Logical methods; however, I will explain how a piece of scientific knowledge is founded. For further ease, we can take the example of experimental physicists and theoretical physicists- an experimental physicist uses a telescope or his sense-organs to accumulate observable facts; whereas, a theoretical physicist uses mathematics to gather scientific data. An experimental physicist uses empirical observations whereas, a theoretical physicist uses a rational method. One uses his eyes, whereas the other uses his mind (in improper colloquial terms.)

Common sense is defined by Merriam-Webster as "sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts So far." I don't believe that definitions can give a comprehensive understanding, but they are apt enough to give perspective. To understand commonsense more particularly, I will reduce commonsense into a mere perception formed after a situation, experience, or even fact. Common sense as a trap is based on the illusion of knowledge: debauchery of truth. Hence, it is filled with assumptions and social acceptance more than the truth. I often say: "commonsense is mere common-dogma; or, commonsense is a common lie." Whatever it may be, the fundamental feature of common sense is that it is merely a singular empirical claim. However, when empirical claim gains social acceptance, it becomes common sense. I don't view common sense as a bad thing: in terms of convenience, it is much simpler and efficient than scientific knowledge; However, in terms of reliability, and validity scientific knowledge far exceeds that of commonsense. But, we must also realize that all scientific exploration starts from an empirical claim; hence, common sense is also necessary for science.

In the web of knowledge, in the core lies logic, with scientific knowledge surrounding it. (see picture i) In the periphery, there are empirical claims. Scientific knowledge is much nearer to logic than empirical claims. Hence, science prevails because it has more reliability and validity than commonsense. This doesn't mean common sense is discardable: it only means, in a perspective hierarchy, it remains lower than science. But in the web of belief, all are equally important. Without commonsense (empirical claim)-no knowledge is possible: every knowledge starts with it. However, we must understand that even if common sense is convenient, it is not reliable: hence, a claim should merely be a claim: not a prejudiced belief; this is when common-sense becomes dangerous.

-Nishant Pokharel

Common sense sometimes helps to gain scientific truth and be the source of science for some reasons. But science always "prevails" over common sense. Common sense is a initiative and science is the result. The word "prevail" simply means superior. And of course, the thing with pure logic and proven facts should always be in a superior position than a judgement based on a simple perception (COMMON SENSE). While reading different theories, we read about classical and modern concept. And we emphasize modern concept but that doesn't mean we ignore the classical one. We take classical concept as a base but the concept that leads is surely the modern. In the same way, we may take common sense as a base occasionally but the dominance is always shown by scientific knowledge. Hence, science prevails over common sense.

Sambriddhi Timalsina

Whereas, common sense is used in the sense of natural instinct. It is our just knowledge of day to day life. Science is a step beyond and it provide scientific explanations in the reality of life.

Common sense and science are two words that are often confused when it comes to their meanings when strictly speaking, there is a difference between the two words. Common sense is our usual understanding of practical issues. The word common sense is used in the sense of ‘natural instinct.’ On the other hand, science is the study or knowledge of the physical and natural world based on observation and experimentation. The word science is used in the sense of a ‘kind of knowledge.’ Common sense is our knowledge of day to day life.

Common sense has no structure to it, is explicitly subjective, and is subject to all manner of cognitive biases. There is no need for testing, replication, or verification when you are reasoning for yourself. No checks for you to pass or fail, no peers reviewing. It is also why science is so much better at explaining things.

Since, Science goes a step beyond common sense and explores why an incident occurs in that particular way and are based on fact, not opinion or preferences we can say science prevails over common sense

Lavish Jung Gurung

common sense is the basic understanding of our mind based on our beliefs, experiences which are usually superstitious. it's the first thought that strikes our mind for a topic, without any analysis, proper knowledge, research, evidence, and proof alike science. Thus it's just a thought and not knowledge As knowledge is something that's proven researched and analyzed. Thus our thoughts backed by common sense are not trustworthy as it's a simple utopia of any topic and thus is not logical where science is always based on facts and hence is the reality, the present backed by evidence and hence is less or rarely questionable thus more logical than common sense.
- karuna karna

Common sense is based on natural instincts, assumptions and can’t be reliable. Scientific knowledge, on the other hand, is highly based on reliable information backed up by experiments, facts , evidences or logics. The logics to prove something as a scientific knowledge are made through critical evaluation of casual relationship of chain of events which are reliable and certain and follow the same pattern that they had been following before. For example, it’s a common sense to assume that a chicken after eating salt tends to suffer from salt intoxication .This is common sense because its based on assumption, not every time that a chicken which has eaten salt suffers from salt intoxication . When its given leftover vegetables containing salt in it, after ingestion, it turns out to be perfectly fine. So it’s a common sense because only when chicken eats high amount of crystals of salt , it tends to suffer from salt intoxication. But the scientific knowledge, however, is entirely based on knowledge backed up by facts, research, experiments or repeated experiences. For ex: if we say that a leech dies instantly after we pour salt over its body by causing its blood or moisture to ooze out of its body wall due to the natural phenomenon called osmotic pressure, it’s a scientific knowledge. Because there has never been a single case where leech doesn’t die after being doused with salt over its body .And there is a valid research-based theory/ reason as to why a leech instantly dies after being doused with the salt. This sort of information is called scientific knowledge. Such scientific knowledge is reliable and certain. There are no doubts behind it. Its easier to convince because it is backed up by evidence, experiments and research-based study making it to become an information holding a true value. So it’s a proposition to say that “A leech dies after being poured with salt over its body”, unlike “ A chicken eating salt tends to suffer from salt intoxication.” which is a common sense as it doesn’t hold the actual true value . Hence, scientific knowledge always prevails over common sense.

Science provides us more accurate understanding on any matters by providing necessary theories, concept and scientific method/researchs , which clearly are not provided by common sense. Science is based on extensively evaluated evidence for it's conclusion. Common sense is whatever people around them happen to believe. When asking questions about random phenomena we often turn to common sense to provide answers to those inquires. However, relying on common sense alone, without the application of science is not enough because it might lead to illogical reasoning, ignorant assumptions or false information. For eg. Common sense used to tell us that earth is flat, because that is the way things appear to us without scientific investigation. Common sense doesn't depend upon verification whereas science rely upon required verification.
-Sanjana

Well, common sense is information gathered from plainly everyday knowledge whereas science is about research on a particular subject with concluded fact.Common sense often have confirmation bias for example;once we begin to believe that women are more talkative then men,we tend to notice and remember talkative women and silent men but ignore or forget silent women and talkative me.Science is a reality re-imagined.It correct our seriously flawed cognition and give us unfiltered view of reality.Science help us to understand the universe by freeing us from a reliance on gut-feelings or unchecked reasoning hopelessly rooted in the unsystematic software of our brain.Common sense simply has no structure and explicitly very subjective in almost everything in cognitive biases manner. There is no need for testing, replication or verification when one is reasoning in common sense. This is the reason that science prevails over common sense.

The reason for science prevailing over common sense is because its uses conceptual schemes and theoretical structures while common sense has no structure to it, Basically, a common sense means a conventional intelligence that people gathered from everyday situations, events etc. Science mean a knowledge about our world based on facts learned through numerous experiments, observation etc. In conclusion, the reason for science prevailing over common sense is because its uses conceptual schemes and theoretical structures while common sense has no structure to it.

Science is the study of knowledge of the physical and natural world based on observation and experimentation. Science provides scientific explanations for realities in life and those that we take for granted. On the other hand, common sense is one's usual understanding of practical issues. It is our knowledge of day to day reality.

Both science and Common sense rely on fundamentally concrete modes of thoughts. Both science and Common sense are ways to observe and justify different things of day to day life. However, a lay person has common sense only whereas an academic/scientiat has both common sense and scientific knowledge.
The difference between science and Common sense can be best understood by the following example. Imagine two persons are traveling in a vehicle with certain speed. From common sense point of view, one can feel that speed fast but that speed might not be felt faster by another person. On the other hand from science point of view, the speed of the vehicle for both of them would be same.

Science is based on knowledge of facts, developing theories, testing hypothesis, public and repeatable procedures etc. whereas common sense is based on prior experience. Science is precise but common sense is vague. Science questions the obvious whereas common sense accepts it. Common sense is individualistic i.e. it differs from person to person but science is universal i.e. it is same for all. Common sense accepts the explanations according to the perception and bias whereas science systematically rule out variables that are possible causes, not bias.

Hence science prevails over common sense as common sense is just one's understanding and perception towards something whereas science is backed by facts, truths though common sense is the source for science.

- ROHAN YADAV
    Blue zone

Simply, Science is a branch of knowledge or study body of facts or truth in a systematic way whereas, common sense includes our knowledge of day to day realities. Common sense is the knowledge that allows us to behave properly in the society. But science goes a step beyond and provides scientific explanations for realities in life.
for example, A is dead in bedroom along with a bottle of poison. Here, The investigator would investigate the case, whether it is murder or suicide, with the analysis of finger print in bottle of poison, or postmortem of body, or finding other clue. Thus, He uses systematic (scientific) way to find out the truth of death whether murder or suicide (simply use of science). But, The layman, who see the person death in bedroom along with a bottle of poison, would conclude that a person is death by consuming poison ( simply a common sense). so using common sense one may not conclude about the truth of such dead.
Thus, Logic also uses the science i.e. being based on fact for reasoning. Hence, science prevails over common sense.
Ajin Shrestha

When defining the terms common-sense and scientific knowledge, separately, common sense is a general perception, a knowledge generated through opinion and beliefs of general people, whereas scientific knowledge is a formalized knowledge, a knowledge learned through systematic and critical thinking or practice. The definition itself reflects the level of authenticity and reliability a scientific knowledge upholds over common.

A common sense knowledge is knowledge out of hear-say and usually is accepted by people without proof and debate. And because of this, common sense is sometimes contradictory.

For example, a common sense belief says, "Absence makes the heart pound."

On the other hand there is a popular belief,

"Out of sight, out of heart."

Therefore, these popular hear-say statements themselves don't agree with each other. However, scientific knowledge carries its validity and compatibility wherever it goes.

A common-sense becomes a justified knowledge when science comes into play. Science is what provides facts, bases, and logic to why something is to be followed, believed or concluded. You brush your teeth after meals not because you do it everyday or everyone does so, but because you need to keep them clean so that you don't get germs.

Common sense knowledge is based on hindsight bias, overconfidence and superstition which may lead us to falsehood and wrong conclusion, but scientific knowledge has its bases on curiosity, skepticism and criticism, which always questions every discourse. Therefore, next time someone says "I knew this would happen!" It might just be a coincidence and we can conclude that science does prevail over common sense!!

-Shalini Tripathi (blue zone)

Common sense is a basic ability to perceive, understand and judge things , which is shared by people and can be reasonably expected without any need for debate. In general sense, common sense is a way of taking social understanding and rules , and applying them to a situation by using common sense. Common sense commands us not to drive on wrong side of the roads , and not to swim in tha fast flowing river. The word science is derived from Latin word "scientia" which refers to knowledge. So , science is the body of knowledge, comprising of measurable or verifiable facts acquired through application of the scientific method and generalized into scientific law or principles. Science is the investigation through observation , theoretical explanation and experimentation.
Scientific knowledge is objective. Objectivity simply means the ability to see and accept facts as they are , not as on might wish them to be. To be objective, one has to guard against his own biases, beliefs, wishes, value and preferences. Science rests upon sense data i.e data gathered through our sense like ear, eye , nose, touch, and tongue . Scientific knowledge is based on verifiable evidence i.e concrete factual observation so the other observer can observe , weight or measure the same phenomena and check out the observation for accuracy. Science is ethically neutral. It only seeks knowledge. It explains how the knowledge is determined by social values. Scientific knowledge must occur under the prescribed circumstances not once but repeatedly. Scientific knowledge is accurate. For example: A physical, like a common man, will not say that the patient has slight temperature of having very high temperature but after measuring with the help of thermometer, he will say that the patient is having 101.4 F temperature. Accuracy simply means truth or correctness of a statement of describing things in exact words as they are without jumping unwarranted conclusion .
Scientific knowledge is durable and reliable, but it is also open to change. Science provides factual explanation for phenomenon. So, science prevails over common sense.
~Swekshya Chaudhary
