I think Bennie was so compelling because she seemed to have different morals than other characters. Most characters seemed to be caught up in the idea of what they couldn't do, but Bennie seemed to be more concentrated around the idea of what she could do. I particularly was compelled by her interest in Asagai and the Nigerian culture. Unlike others in the book who seemed to be presumptuous about the culture, Bennie seemed interested in learning more. While I do not agree with all of her beliefs and desires, I can understand them, and I can align myself with her passion. She's part of a family who has either already given up (ie Ruth) or is desperate to change the way they are by any means necessary even if they are foolish (ie Walter). While they choose to ruminate on their shortcomings, Beneatha chooses to dream and hope. I also think that I found her most compelling because she made me think the most about the diaspora. She's obsessed with Nigerian culture because she is "looking for her identity," I guess that I include all of this information to showcase that while all the other characters are focusing on betting (or succumbing to) their situations, Beneatha is focusing on bettering herself.  I believe this to be a strong attribute and one that compels me to support her. She tries different hobbies because she wants to find out who she is, and once she does she wants to be content with that person. Anyone can have hopes and dreams but even if they accomplish everything they ever want, if they don't know who they are and love that person, they are predestined to fail. With this mindset, she is the most likely, in my opinion, of all the characters to have a happy life. She reminds me a lot of my own mother, extremely caring but also wants everything to be her way. She cares so much for her children and it shows. She has so much love for her children and it shows even when she is being tough with them. I liked her because she wants the best for her children and her opinion is not always what her children want to hear, but she is going to say it anyways. She comes from a different time than her children and it seems that she might not want to keep up with the expanding mind of her daughter. Her daughter, Beneatha, has dreams for more, to be a doctor. Lena's dream for more is stability, a house and a garden of her own. She didn’t get that but she is going to make sure that her daughter, and daughter-in-law, gets that and more. I found her passion compelling.

I loved how open she was. Her want to try new things like learning the guitar and how her family knows and sees her as someone who is always trying new things pulled me into her character. Something else I found very enduring about her character as while it is said that she does not want what most women want and how according to Walter she should do more womanly stuff- I feel as though she never shamed other women ( Ruth) for wanting anything different. She reminds me of so many hardworking women in my life so I feel connected to her on that level. You can see that she tends to and cares for majority of the household by ensuring that everyone is up and getting ready, making breakfast for everyone and ironing everyone’s clothes. This is all while she has her own job to support the family. I also like Ruth’s dreams or should I say hopes of moving with the check that came to mama on Saturday. Ruth’s character also brings up larger themes of motherhood, the role of a wife in a heterosexual marriage, and identity. I think motherhood is the most pressing at this time due to Ruth being pregnant with a child but she’s unsure if she wants go full term with the pregnancy due to their current circumstances.
