Canon of Terrorist Attacks in the U.S.A. - Caleb Jackson P.7. by Caleb Jackson

Terrorism is a rather large problem to the United States, even today. The definition of terrorism on the Google search engine is "the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians". Most terrorist attacks come with a count. Usually a count of fatalities, or just wounded people. The most significant terrorist attacks in the U.S are classified into different categories, which make up a canon of said terrorist attacks. A criteria in which may be able to classify terror attacks into a list could be the people affected by them, the most fatal attacks, and possibly some other categorizations. There are many reasons why a person or group might terrorize a population. According to an article on the U.S News site (MLA source one), "Terrorism is often used in asymmetric power struggles: or in other words, when a weaker person, or group, is fighting against a powerful nation-state. The violence is aimed at creating fear in the targeted population and often provokes prompt and violent response from the state." People have their reasons for violence, whether it be religion, unfairness, or just even mistreatment/disrespect. Think of it this way. Some terrorists out there believe in certain things, and sometimes push to make us believe it as well. They utilize violence and death to prove points. Another thing about terrorist groups is that they differ in action the same way they differ in their problem. According to the first MLA Source again, "different terrorist groups act is informed by what they are trying to achieve. Some adopt a reactionary perspective aimed at stopping or resisting social, economic and political changes. Examples include IS, Al-Qaeda and the Army of God, a Christian anti-abortion group based in the U.S." This canonical list will hopefully go in depth on the most influential and significant U.S terrorism.

September 11th just happens to be one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in the 21st century so far. The third cited website gives us some background information that explains that "On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush." In fact, a majority of Americans still honor this day every year to show that we never forget the fallen citizens, firefighters, and even military personnel. According to the second source (the statistical list), 2,993 people were killed on that day, and 8,900 were injured majorly. This definitely belongs to this canon, mainly because of the impact it left, and the turning point it became in George W. Bush's presidency over our country.

The Oklahoma City Bombings were one of the worst terrorist attacks in the U.S before 9/11. According to the fifth source, "On April 19, 1995, a truck-bomb explosion outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, left 169 people dead and hundreds more injured. The blast was set off by anti-government militant Timothy McVeigh, who in 2001 was executed for his crimes. His co-conspirator Terry Nichols received life in prison. Until September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma City bombing was the worst terrorist attack to take place on U.S. soil." This bombing affected many. Although not widely renown as a terrorist attack, it was still devastating nonetheless. This belongs in the canon of terrorism due to the immensity of the consequences, the death toll, and the shock of it all.

The shooting at Pulse night club sparked a lot of people. According to the fourth source, a shooter stormed a gay nightclub, wielding an assault rifle and a pistol, and carried out the worst mass shooting in United States history, leaving 50 people dead and 53 wounded. The attacker, identified by law enforcement officials as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old who was born in New York, turned what had been a celebratory night . . . into a panicked scene of unimaginable slaughter, the floors slicked with blood, the dead and the injured piled atop one another." This was not that long ago, and is still as fresh in most minds today as it was when it first happened. In 2016, a very large controversial topic was treating the gay communities better, and then this happened. All in all, this one should definitely be on the canon because of the respect it sparked and the social media buzz afterwards.

The Anthrax letters were letters laced with dangerous chemicals. Usually sent to governmental officials, it scared people, since they might have a tainted letter in your paperwork. This belongs in the canonical list because of many things. This proved that terrorism doesn't just have to be by conventional means. It scared many people, because there is no way to see something such as that coming.

One of the worst uprisings of the 60's just happened to be the black riots in Detroit. This would be considered a terrorist attack that came from the inside. The whites were mercilessly killing and injuring blacks for wanting to be equal. Based off of the information in source six, "In the five days and nights of violence 33 blacks and 10 whites were killed, 1,189 were injured and over 7,200 people were arrested. Approximately 2,500 stores were looted and the total property damage was estimated at about $32 million. Until the riots following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King in April 1968, the Detroit Race Riot stood as the largest urban uprising of the 1960s." This belongs on the list because it led to the conclusion that everyone needs to be equal.

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, up until his assassination in 1865. This sparked a major search operation for John Wilkes Booth, who killed Lincoln personally. According to my seventhsource listed at the bottom, "Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States, was the first American president to be assassinated. He was mortally wounded by John Wilkes Booth in the Presidential Box of Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., while watching the comedy, Our American Cousin." This is very important to my canonical list because Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated in office (followed by President Garfield in 1881). Lincoln meant a lot to the Civil War, and his untimely death was a shock to America.

MLK was an important figure to America, and the freedom it provides for everyone. If someone murdered him, it would definitely be a huge act of terrorism towards the country. In fact, that is exactly what happened to King. He ended up getting shot by James Earl Ray. That event had major repercussions on the population. There were riots all over America, from blacks and whites alike. This belongs in the canon because King is one of the very few reasons that we have equal rights in the present. He caused much good to occur for modern America.

World Trade Center Truck Bombing (1993)

The 9/11 incident was not the only World Trade Center attack. A bombing in the garage of the Center killed six people and injured over a thousand. According to the eighth source, "a massive truck bomb ripped a hole almost 30 meters (100 feet) across the B-2 level of the parking garage beneath the World Trade Center's North Tower. The blast wave was so powerful that it penetrated five stories of the reinforced concrete building. In addition to causing structural damage, the explosion destroyed or heavily damaged hundreds of vehicles in the garage." You can infer from this that there was a lot of damage that had to be repaired. This bombing was unfortunate to have lost six people. Any loss of life is a tragedy. This canon should include it since it generated a lot of attention back in 1993, and for the next couple years afterward.
