While this may be been true of some communities, MOOCs of this size simply don't have the intimacy to enable it. In fact, it has about as much chance of creating it as being at a music concert - there is certainly a shared interest but the sheer volume of noise and other people shouting that one cant connect with others unless they are very close (known to you already) or you find some marginal common interest only because of the close timing of your interaction.

Links to this ethnography have been shared within the MOOC community commentary so any participants will see a reflection of their community and MOOC. No comments so far. So does this reflect a general malaise from the community about being studied in this way? Or does this prove that no real community actually exists at all apart from a few minor networked, timing sequenced groupings that may or maynot stumble upon it? What if a lone participant follows the link in weeks or months after this MOOC has run its delivery schedule - are they part of the community and does thier opinion count?

Question: Does a cMOOX atrophy in to a xMOOC when all the semi-synchronous components are done?
