Collaboration is most difficult when the language is not shared. If the students do not feel proficient in English, then it is difficult to communicate ideas to their partners, and more meaningful collaboration beyond simple communication is very difficult to achieve.

It is sometimes difficult to convince students the purpose and value of global collaboration. We hear things like, "why should we stay after late," etc. It takes work to help students understand how valuable and important it is to communicate and collaborate with others internationally beyond talking about pizza. It is sometimes just as difficult to convince the parents of the value--why should my student stay after or arrive early for this purpose rather than the other activities they need to do.

The time available with our classes is different; one partner has students 5 days a week and the other partner only has 2. That makes it very difficult to engage meaningfully in the same projects when time is so limited. One class may finish their study earlier and need to move onto the next area of learning, while the other class has not had time enough to complete or engage with the project.

8 hour difference in collaborative time makes it very difficult to meet together regularly; we cannot discuss live more often than once a month which means discussion about a collaborative project is incredibly difficult. The planning/brainstorming, the discussion throughout the work to ensure alignment, is very difficult to achieve, and the timing of working on it at the same time is impossible.
