Video: Asking Trump Supporters about Fake Policies

The artifact is a video of Trump supporters on the streets being asked if they support Trump policies that aren't actually real. For example, a man was asked, "Trump plans to legalize rape in Indiana. What are your thoughts?" The man being interviewed agrees with these fake policies simply because he thinks that they were proposed by Trump.

This video was uploaded on March 17, 2016 by a comedic YouTube channel called Danny Duncan. The video is intended to show the ignorance of Trump supporters, and to tell its viewers that they will support anything by Trump. The video seems to have been directed at Trump supporters to insult them, as well as those opposing Trump in order to fuel their anger.

In 1984, Orwell showcases mob mentality influencing people's political opinions. For example, in the Two Minutes of Hate, people express intense anger at the enemy, Emmanuel Goldstein, together as a group. The Two Minute Hate can be compared to our society's political riots, where people gather in the streets to express displeasure at our government.

This is important since as voters, citizens of the United States hold the ability to elect certain representatives, which ultimately means that the people determine the political policies and laws of the country. Because we hold such power, we must carefully choose who we vote for, and mob mentality will hinder with our ability to think rationally. For example, as a Los Angeles resident, I see too many people opposing Trump and supporting Bernie Sanders without knowing anything about politics. Their political stance seems to be purely decided by the political stances of their peers, and this is very worrying.

Justin Bieber hate forums thread

In this forums thread, people insult Justin Bieber for unreasonable reasons. The target audience appears to be young teenagers who enjoy insulting celebrities, as the forums thread is named "Justin Bieber Hate Club". The thread was created by Topix user Shawn Michaels on May 14, 2010. In its body, it says

Feel free to curse him all you want. =D

People replied with:

Somebody should shut that 6 year old up.

I have ever right to talk shit about him he deserves it he is a worthless talented lazy ass 16 year old kid looking like 12 because knows that a older girl sees nothing in him but a preteen girl does for some reason he is not musical talented at all his lyrics FUCKING SUCK REALLY FUCKIING ANNYOYING. People say he is gay but who gives a shit. What I cant stand is because of all the looks he really doesnt deserve all the fame and money only if he does have some talent but all mostly is a distraction to his image to young girls.

Around a few years ago, Justin Bieber was easily the most disliked celebrity for no reason. Justin Bieber's music video, Baby, is the most disliked video on Youtube. It became a trend to hate Justin Bieber.

1984's Emmanuel Goldstein is similar to Justin Bieber. Like Bieber, Goldstein is hated by nearly all of Oceania because of mob mentality.

It is scary to see mob mentality in action. Justin Bieber is like any other celebrity, yet he receives such hostility. This is dangerous to society since it will decrease individuality and people's ability to form their own opinions.

News Article: Red Sox fans riot after victory

This news article, written in October 31, 2013 by Huffington Post, uses photos to illustrate the destruction caused by sports fans after a their team's victory in a televised baseball game. This news article was written for people looking to read about current events.

In 1984, people gather during the annual Hate Week to show their support for the political party IngSoc. In the case of the Red Sox fans, they gathered to violently support their favorite sports team.

This shows that mob mentality can lead to violence. It would have been devastating if these riots were more widespread. What if the number of people who participated in these riots were not in the hundreds, but in the thousands? What if these riots in Boston inspired other riots throughout the nation? What if every sport event was followed by a riot? Mob mentality is a threat to our safety, as shown in the Boston riots.

This video was posted by a Chinese News agency. When a girl is struck by a truck, many people walk by without providing help. It takes minutes until someone finally stops to help The target audience is people living in China. This video was uploaded to YouTube to encourage people to step up in situations where others need assistance.

In 1984, Orwell uses the proles to portray indifference. Being 80% of the population, the proles are able to defeat the government, yet they are unwilling to do so. The bystanders in this video are similar to the proles. They refuse to do what is right because they see that other's aren't doing it either.

This is known as the Bystander Effect. People are less likely to intervene in emergency situations when there is a large amount of people around them.

Change can only be achieved if people act, and indifference is the obstacle. When change is needed, most people will not act and stay compliant due to herd mentality. This is dangerous to our society.

Artifact #5 is a more personal example of mob mentality. This is a screenshot of texts between me and my friend. He says that he doesn't like the school that we go to. When asked why, he replies with "idk". When I force an answer our of him, he answers, "the food". Why does this friend of mine dislike the school solely because of the lunch that it provides?

I captured screenshots of our texts to display herd mentality affecting the way students think in my school. Although this artifact was created for this project, the intended audience would be students of Larchmont Charter School.

Mob mentality seems to be common in LCS. I notice students forming irrational opinions after listening to their fellow students. As shown in this artifact, many students dislike our school for ridiculous reasons such as the food.

Larchmont Charter School is a reflection of our society today. Mob mentality can breed anger and opposition toward something that is perfectly fine. When people are too occupied with fighting against these pointless things, they tend to ignore more serious issues that deserve attention.

This was predicted by Orwell. In 1984, all of the proles are distracted by the lottery game and are uninterested in the missile attacks. This is a powerful case of mob mentality.
