Priscila Garcia Romano
Lara Strangis
3A

Isabel Angélica Allende Llona was born in Lima, august 2nd, 1942. She's a Chilean writer. She's Tomás Allende Pesce's and Francisca Llona Barros' daughter. She's the oldest of three children. Her parents got divorced and her mother went to Chile with Isabel and her two brothers, they lived there from 1946 to 1953. Thanks to her mother's second marriage, she traveled to Bolivia and studied in an american school in La Paz, and in Líbano she studied in an american private school. When she came back to Chile in 1959, she married Miguel Frías. They had two children, Paula (who died in 1992 because of a porphyria) and their other child, Nicolás. She passed through another marriage and now she's single. From 1959 to 1965 she worked in the UN ("United Nations") for the FAO ("agriculture and food") in Santiago de Chile. During the next two years she spent a long time in Europe, residing especially in Bruselas and Switzerland. In 1967 she took part in the writing of the Paula's magazine, after that she was Mampato's magazine director and she published books for children ("La Abuela Panchita" and "Lauchas y lauchones, ratas y ratones"). Also, she worked in two TV channels. In the early 70's she studied dramaturgy. She stayed in Venezuela for 13 years, where she worked for different magazines. In 1982, she published her most known book, "La casa de los espíritus", it was born when she was writing a letter to her dying grandfather. Two years after her daughter died, she founded "The Isabel Allende Foundation", in tribute to her daughter, who worked as a voluntary in marginal communities. Since 1988, she's been staying in San Rafael. She was distinguished in the Academy of Arts and Letters in the USA, and her phrase is "let your imagination fly and write the necessary". Right now she has more than 20 books, some of the most recognized are: "La casa de los espíritus (1982)", "De amor y de sombra (1984)", "Eva Luna (1987)", "Paula (1994)", "Hija de la fortuna (1998)", "Retrato en Sepia (2000)". Some awards she won are: "Novela del año (Chile, 1983)", "Panorama literario (Chile, 1983)", "Premio Mulheres a la Mejor Novela Extranjera (Portugal, 1983)", "Library Journal's Best Book (EEUU, 1988)".

Isabel Allende, in her first novels, shows a strong realism: Chile's history from it's conservative customs, the prevailing sexism, mixed with the fascinating history of unique families, with extraordinary powers that came from a superior understanding of actual events, past and future. There is an inseparable bond between the real history, loaded with political elements and social troubles, and supernatural facts that are taken naturally by the characters. The mother-daughter relationship, topic that repeats in all of her novels, is strong, wonderful, full of love, of happiness, indestructible even beyond death.
