Parrett is presenting a scene of helplessness of the passengers as they are willing and hoping to be able to do something, leave and break through the ice but are unable to. Presenting their feelings and emotions as they begin to miss food, home, activities and people. Readers also begin to understand how long they have been gone for as food supplies and drinks are running out creating a sense of danger in the future, perhaps foreshadowing.

Technique | Example | Explain
Metaphor | ‘The sun is relentless’ | This sentence is used to describe the sun. The effect of this is to represent the sun always there taunting the crew throughout the day, never resting, persistent. This helps reinforce Bo’s current physical state that he is tired and in need of rest but is unable to because of the relentless sun
Visual Imagery | ‘My breath is puffs of white vapour, the air cold on my face’ | The use of this sentence is to represent in the reader's mind an icy cold day, where your breath is puffs of white vapour, the air cold on your face. Through this the readers become engaged with the text and characters and grasp just how cold it would be for the characters

Chapter 32: MS Nella Dan 18th December, 1986 (pp. 106-112)

There is a massive contrast between the sentences ‘in the freezer, a body bag that we must pass every day’ and ‘somehow we have run out of onions’. When bo says ‘we must pass’ shows bo be solemn? that he is unable to do anything about it. That he is willing to do something but is helpless and is therefore depressed. Immediately after he says ‘somehow we have run out of onions’ completely changing the mood and tone from depressing to back to normal everyday life, that they are running out of food. The quick switch between the two sentences shows that Bo is depressed, and also aware of current situations that need to be dealt with, that they are running out of food.

2. Bo’s choice of words is very important in this sentence. ‘Lucky. And I want to be alive’ rather than lucky to be alive. This shows that Bo is feeling grateful to be in alive, in the situation that he is in. However, mournful that Soren is not alive and lucky. ‘here in this wonderland’ where anything can happen. With everyday becoming harder and harder Bo wants to continue to live, carrying on despite feeling homesick, shortage of food and drinks.

3. There is a significant change in Bo’s attitude, on pages 110 and 112 he does not worry about the problems. Bo seems to have forgotten the hardships and problems they are facing and is free from these responsibilities, eating away ‘like we haven't eaten for days’ and singing along to the song because ‘it's impossible no to join in’. However, on page 106 there is an evident change in attitude where Bo faces reality that there are problems going into the future. Bo realises that ‘it would take many months to run out, but the fresh vegetables are going’. Others already seem to recognize the problem and are annoyed and frustrated that ‘no one wants to eat it’. Bo changes between facing the problems and running away from the problems at hand which drastically change his attitude and mood.
