Zimmermann Telegraph: January 16, 1917

The Zimmermann Telegraph was one of the significant reasons why the U.S. joined the war because it caused the general American public to want to join WW1 and think negatively of Germany. As the telegraph stated that Germany would help Mexico recover their "lost" land, which meant starting a potential war with the United States. This upset many Americans because it showed that Germany was willing to play dirty in order to win the war. As Germany tried to make one of the U.S.'s most important partners, Mexico, betray them and potentially start another war.

This was significant to the U.S. joining WW1 because it effected America economically, socially, and politically. As this meant that U.S. ships could not transport goods to the British, one of their biggest foreign markets at the the time. Which meant the U.S. lost a majority of their profit from foreign markets. Additionally many Americans were upset over not being able to freely travel the sea, as they believed it was in their right to freely travel.

U.S. establishes the Committee on Public Information (CPI): April 13, 1917

This was significant because the CPI helped to spread propaganda so that the general U.S. public could get behind the war. As before the spread of U.S. propaganda most of the American public was for remaining neutral in WW1. This showed that the government was willing to manipulate the general U.S. public in order to convince them that joining this war was important. Furthermore this shows how invested the U.S. government was with their investments overseas as through convincing it's citizens to back this war it would mean eventual casualties on the battlefield.

Liberty bonds were significant as they helped get the general U.S. public behind the war. With the help of liberty bonds combined with propaganda the government made it seem as if buying a bond was a civic duty. Through convincing American citizens to buy these bonds the U.S. was able to raise a lot of money for the war effort. These liberty bonds were extremely important in funding the war effort, as the war costed the U.S. around 35.5 billion with liberty bonds raising around 2/3 of that.

The significance of this act was that it helped to procure a sizable army in a quick and efficient way. This act not only armed the U.S. for WW1 but also for other future wars and battles. Additionally this event was also important because it showed that U.S. was not scared to interfere with people's civil liberties. As many men were required to sign up to the draft and if chosen they were also required to serve in the military during the war.

This was one of the most influential events of the war because it should that the U.S. government could bend the rights of the Constitution. As in order to prevent potential infiltration the government decided to limit the bounds of the 1st Amendment. Meaning that the government limited seemingly "free speech", as citizens could be penalized under this act for certain speech and/or actions. This showed that the U.S. government could hold more power over the "boundless" U.S. Constitution.

This battle was significant as it was one of the final blows to Germany and one of the final Allied offensive of WW1. Through this battle the Allies were able to deplete Germany's forces as this offensive resulted in 120,000 casualties combined from both sides. Through depleting their forces the Allied forces forced Germany to eventually call their final retreat. This battle helped to demoralize and weaken Germany's forces and was one of causes that also led to Germany's eventual surrender and the end of WW1.

Wilson uses attends Paris Peace Conference, uses his 14 points as basis of peace talks: January 1919

This event was significant because it shows how much President Wilson valued world peace as in his 14 points he mentions getting rid colonial holdings and returning land that was taken during the war. Why this is important is because by suggesting getting rid of worldwide imperialism that would also include the U.S. getting rid of their colonial holdings. This supports that he prioritized world peace because getting rid of colonies would mean many nations, including the U.S, would lose hundreds of millions. So by being willing to get rid of a big economic contributor of the United States, he shows he values world peace over financial gain. He also shows his longing for world peace through his idea for the League of Nations; an international organization he believed could promote international cooperation and peace.

Supreme Court rules on Schenck v. United States: March 3, 1919

This ruling was significant as it showed that the U.S. was able to infringe on constitutional rights. As the ruling of this case was in favor of the U.S. and helped establish the "clear and present danger" test. Which established that there was a time and place when things could be said and put a limit on seemingly "free speech". This ruling changed how speech could be perceived legally in the United States for many years.

19th Amendment is ratified: August 18, 1920

The significance of the 19th Amendment is that it represents how important women were to the war effort. As over 9 million american women contributes to the war effort. Whether it was by working to produce weapons, red cross volunteers, ambulanceman drivers, or replacing men on the workforce. Through also carrying the burden of the war and helping keep things in the states function normally women helped prove that they were equally as important as the men. So through proving their worth the general public realized the irony of women being able to contribute to the war effort but do nothing to prevent it, as they could not vote or run for office.
