She also noted that the book that influenced her to write was El Visitante by Alma Maritano. Maritano's work was banned by the Argentinian authoritarian government, but through her work and her characters she showed the truth about society and injustices in the world, something that Yamile Saied Méndez seeks to do through her work.

The book uses language like “I will be” instead of “I hope I will be” or “I might be”. Using this more positive, forward language gives children the confidence that they can be whatever or whoever they want to be. This inspiring message encourages children to work towards their dreams even at a young age. This book is recommended for preschool-3rd graders (4-8 year olds).

When she asks where she is from, he tells her she is from the pampas, gaucho, mountains, oceans, hurricanes and dark storms, etc. But most importantly, her abuelo tells her she is from his love and the love of all those before them. This children’s book explores themes of identity, self-acceptance, and home. This book resonates with anyone who has ever felt that they don’t belong. The recommended grade level range is K-2.

She is also a founding member of Las Musas which is a collection of women and nonbinary Latinx MG and YA authors.
