In only 24 hours his music video for "This is America" gained 12.9 million views. This song is extremely catchy and fun although it has a few hidden messages that you may miss the first time around. "This is America" is about two major current issues that America faces as a country, Gun violence, and equality among all races. Childish Gambino is most likely speaking about cell phones being used as a tool to capture questionable moments of police brutality. Although we have these “tools” to capture these moments, police officers have still gotten away with their actions. This may seem harmless but their school uniforms indicate to us that school children are yet another victim of gun violence. With all the recent school shootings within the past 5 years Gambino is demonstrating that no American is safe. This man within the first minute of the music video is tied up with a bag over his head and then is brutally shot and killed. This death signifies how the African American community is mistreated and wronged in America. Although, there are minor things about the music video and song that weaken its effect. For example, during the music video there is too much going on that if you were to only watch it once you may not catch. Many people do not have the time to watch and analyze the video over and over again. Another weakness of the video would be the violent shooting scenes. Childish Gambino demonstrates Americas two current largest issues of racism and gun violence in this music video. "This is America" is another attempt to publicly raise awareness about gun violence and racism in the United States.
