Dr George Taleporos is a person with spinal muscular atrophy, (a group of hereditary diseases that progressively destroys motor neurons—nerve cells in the brain stem and spinal cord that control essential skeletal muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing, leading to muscle weakness and atrophy).

Dr George Taleporos is a disability rights advocate. He has over 20 years of experience in the disability field, focussed predominantly on advocacy, human rights policy and practice, service development and management. He has a PhD in the field of psychology, a Graduate Diploma in educational psychology and Honors in sociology.

Taleporos’s early experience as a child of 1980s segregated education was just the start of a long journey and career standing up for the rights of people with disability.
At 18, he "officially" took on an advocacy role by joining his local disability council, and he is not the Chairperson of the Victorian Disability Advisory Council. Dr George is the policy manager at Summer Foundation, which is passionate about stopping young people with disability from being forced into residential aged care, by helping them access the support needed to be in control of where, how and with whom they live.
An early supporter of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Taleporos was a vocal critic of the intrusive questioning that was part of the much maligned Independent Assessments trial. Instead of Independent Assessments, Taleporos would like to see the introduction of self-assessments and personalised budgets “that put people in complete control of the supports and more importantly, our lives. He says, "I also want to see the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to have at least half its board members being people with disabilities.” Taleporos is watching the government closely to see what will happen next and has interviewed both NDIS minister Linda Reynolds and NIDIA CEO Martin Hoffmanon for his Reasonable and Necessary podcast for the Summer Foundation.
“I constantly remind myself of how lucky I am to live in a country with a NDIS, it might not be perfect but it certainly is making a huge difference to thousands of lives across the country including my own,” Taleporos says.

https://www.inlife.org.au/dr-george-taleporos-on-his-journey-to-advocacy

https://twitter.com/drgeorgethecrip
