She kept feeling like she was not good enough for anyone. I think she has changed very, very much now since she has gotten her Medi-Talker but i think even though she can communicate with words i feel like she cannot communicate with her emotions. She has changed in many ways like having more self confident in her self and feeling like even though I'm different i'm different in a good way. I feel like this quot is best for this summary and the book. "You can't try to blend in, when you were born to stand out."

But she gradually found herself getting caught up into drama, and it took a toll on her family life. She really got depressed and felt really lonely due to the fact that her friends split up and she was in the middle. Along with her stepmom, Lisa who is pregnant, she can't see the one person who helped her the most, and that was her dad. Her mom wasn't very supportive and Matt and Johnny couldn't always be there for her. She ended up going solo for a while and she ended up finding Dan. That really made her open up into this brave, kind and confident person. But she really taught me to be really independent and loyal person, and that is a very valuable life lesson.

She got a chance to go to regular classes, but she still was left out and not bothered. Later she got a helper and then she was able to actually express herself in class. She was really excited. Her helper helped her get an electronic talking bored. That made her even more confident. Later she got into a cool competition, and they earned a chance to go to Washington. That made her super confident. Her friends and family were always by her side. Then, her friends ditched her from the competition. The next day her world came crashing down.

The main character, Catherine has evidently developed throughout the book, Rules, because in the beginning, she was strict on David, always checking the surrounding area looking for nearby people, scared that they might judge her for how ´absurd' and different David is from most people. It was hard for her to enjoy herself without worrying about what other people thought, and often made rules for David, excessively so he could seem ´normal´. But in the end, she realized that it was silly to care about what the world around her believed about her, or David. She let go of her insecurities, so she could let herself ´be free´ in a way. She accepts David for who he is, no matter what society thinks about them, whatever that may be.

My view on empathy and diversity after reading is that both empathy and diversity play a big part in friendship. If people do not have one or the other, trust issues begin to grow, and more complications arise on the way. If a person is having a hard time, it is honestly an amazing feeling when someone comes nearby and kind of assures you that they have been there, and it will get better in the future. Overall, I think empathy is greatly needed to understand people, and is a definite tool toward solving problems.

This book was really amazing, and it opened my eyes in a way, and teaching me that even if people care about me, what they think about me won’t affect me unless I let it affect me. I definitely enjoyed making the checkpoints, and I was eager to see what happened next, I was excited to see how the story played out, and what it ended with. I hope the author Cynthia Lord makes a sequel, if not already.
