When there is a nitrogen deficiency, the development of the flora is scarce, the branches are poor and the oldest leaves can suffer chlorosis.

If there is not enough nitrogen available, plant growth can be stunted, as nitrogen is essential for plant growth and development. This may also curb their ability to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and curb climate change.

Nitrogen is one of the chemical components of proteins, which play an important role in our body, providing materials for the construction and maintenance of all organs and tissues, and participating in the formation of hormones, enzymes and antibodies. This is not commonly used during sample preparation for chemical analysis. It is used to concentrate and reduce the volume of liquid samples. Nitrogen is also important for the chemical industry. It is used in the production of fertilizers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes and explosives.

Excess nitrogen in the atmosphere can produce pollutants such as ammonia and ozone, which can impair our ability to breathe, limit visibility and alter plant growth. When excess nitrogen comes back to earth from the atmosphere, it can harm the health of forests, soils and waterways.

The nitrate form of nitrogen is so soluble that it leaches easily when excess water percolates through the soil. This can be a major loss mechanism in coarse-textured soils where water percolates freely, but is less of a problem in finer-textured, more impermeable soils, where percolation is very slow.
