Childhood refers to the early years in a humans life, it is often divided into 3 stages. During these stages and individual will go through a lot of development and growth. The length of childhood is heavily discussed and depends on whether it is the biological childhood or the social childhood that is being referred to. But generally starts at birth and continues until after adolescence (which can be anything from 18-24 years old). The definitions have evolved over decades as laws, societies and cultures have changed and had significant impacts on how it is defined.

Childhood is a stage of life from birth up until the age of 18, when a person legally transitions into adulthood. It is a period of physical emotional and cognitive development which is shaped by family education and social experiences. Childhood is defined by reliance on caregivers, learning primarily through play, and the progressive development of skills essential for independence. Childhood is often viewed as a time of protection, exploration and personal growth, with fewer responsibilities and legal rights, influenced by cultural, historical and legal factors

Childhood generally begins at birth and legally ends at the age of 18 in many countries, including the UK. However, the legal definition of childhood varies worldwide. For example, in Japan, adulthood starts at 18, although certain rights, such as the legal drinking age, begin at 20. In Iran, under Islamic law, girls may be considered legally responsible at age 9, while boys are considered responsible at age 15. These differences reflect diverse cultural, legal, and religious views on when childhood concludes, and adulthood begins.

Childhood is characterised by several key features. It is a time of significant physical, emotional, and cognitive development, during which children are primarily dependent on adults for care, protection, and guidance. Unlike adults, children are not expected to assume full legal or personal responsibility for their actions and are granted special rights and protections through frameworks like the UNCRC. Play, imagination, and exploration are central to childhood, fostering learning and emotional growth.

Adulthood is typically associated with legal autonomy, personal responsibility, economic independence, and social accountability. While childhood is often viewed as a time of innocence and vulnerability, adulthood implies maturity, self-sufficiency, and a more stable emotional and cognitive state. These distinctions help societies determine the appropriate rights, responsibilities, and types of support at different stages of life.

I believe that childhood is allowing children to feel safe, be loved and give them an environment that allows them to grow and thrive. I think your childhood stops when you are 18 as this is usually a time when many young adults move away to university or get their first full time job and have to live and make decisions independently. However this is based on a childhood that has nothing to impact on their childhood. For many children across the world their childhood is cut short due to contributing factors such as war, poverty and illness. Resulting in children having to grow up sooner than they should.
