I've done proficiency based grading (prefer the word proficiency to mastery) for a few semesters. Students have a difficult time understanding their progress through the course. So it requires lots of discussion on how to progress. But I really really like proficiency based grading: same thought time on "not yet" versus "proficient," but absolutely no thought time on 90% versus 80% or 20% versus 30%

For the self-assessment: I'm hesitant to completely go with a student's thoughts (I graded myself artificially low when I went through such things as an undergrad). When those that grade themselves low are told they are being too low and the low grade stands (as happened to me) it feeds self-criticism: yet another thing I did wrong and it harmed me.

I like that students have the potential to become more self-evaluative and critical. From this, they are more empowered and realize that learning is self-directed.

Mostly, students take more pride in their learning and their ability to think. The majority of my students (>90%) have never truly experienced what it feels like to work hard and succeed. When I see a student that has that moment it is incredible.

So often students retain information in order to pass their assignments/tests/engage in discussion etc. and the content covered in the course is not mastered or retained, but rather doggy-eared for short-term results (earning an A in the class they are currently taking). Ungrading instead allows us to shift the focus onto what they've learned and what still needs to be explored for long-term retention.
