It is very important that we encourage our children to be more active. It was identified in the UK chief Medical officer Guideline that a child of the age 3-4 years should spend 180 minutes (3 hours) per day in a variety of physical activities spread throughout the day. The 180 minutes (3hours) should include 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Through our Healthy Movers program we focus on gross motor skills, helping strengthen them and build our core muscles.

So have a moment to reflect, does your child need to come in a buggy? do they need to be carried? could you go via the park? could they come to Nursery in a scooter?

This term, the children will be settling into the Nursery environment, meeting new friends and learning more about themselves!

Through our topic 'Super Me, Super You', the children will be encouraged to explore different aspects of themselves, their families and their friends including their likes and dislikes, similarities and differences and learn a bit more about their emotions.

This topic leads perfectly onto our 2nd term topic of 'Celebrations'. We would LOVE families to get involved in this topic and help us to broaden the children's experiences (more information to come on Teams).

These topics will be introduced through a range of stories, encouraging the children to share books together using their senses to explore the images, developing book language and talk as well as establishing respect and care for them. Through their carpet sessions and learning choices, the children will experience a range of books both fiction and non-fiction texts. We will be exposing the children to high level vocabulary, building on their storytelling skills by rehearsing the story using actions and text maps, extending their sentences and developing their oracy and confidence.

This term, we will also have a greater emphasis on mark making and giving meaning to the marks the children make. This is one of the first stages of writing.

One focus linked to this is developing your child's hand muscles in preparation for holding a pencil/pen and beginning to mark make. In Nursery, we used many fun activities to develop your child's hand muscles (fine motor) such as manipulating playdoh, using clothes pegs or tweezers to pinch and press, zipping up a coat, singing finger rhymes and doing the actions, drawing using their fingers in sand or shaving foam to name a few. We will start with one of our favourites -Dough Disco!

You can support your child at home by encouraging them to talk about their learning in nursery, helping them to talk about the pictures in the books, treating books respectfully, sharing books with them on a daily basis (sharing a book at bedtime is often a favourite) and encouraging them to strengthen their hand muscles through a range of activities.

Nursery children go out in all types of weather, please make sure your child is wearing suitable clothing for the season/weather.

In Nursery children are encouraged to be active and busy whether this is running, climbing, balancing, jumping, throwing, skipping, dancing, yoga or crawling along the floor while pushing or pulling an object. It is essential that they are strengthening their muscles, defining their skills and accuracy and understanding the importance of physical health.

You can support your child at home by encouraging them to be active (why not make it a family thing?) - encourage walking, make time for trips to the park or open spaces, try yoga/calm time, encourage skills such as throwing/catching or kicking a ball, using a scooter or bike, or go swimming.

We develop language in our immersive environment of words, sounds, rhythm, as well as verbal and non-verbal expression.

You can support at home by encouraging them to talk in full sentences. Ask them open ended questions (not yes/no questions) or I wonder what...., ask their opinion (would you prefer.... I like_____ what do you like), encourage them to ask for things they need and to use more words not gestures. If your child mispronounces a word, please say it back to them correctly. Make sure you look at your child when talking and they look at you......... and enjoy a chat with them.

Don't forget, talking in your home language is just as important!

Nursery rhymes and singing songs plays a huge part in our Nursery learning. It is often the first introduction children have to literacy/storytelling and rhyming words. In Nursery, we are passionate about teaching children a range of rhymes and songs which will be shared in their 'Read and Rhyme' folder.

You can support your child at home by sharing the nursery rhyme sent home, reading rhyming books and encouraging them to guess/repeat the rhyming word in the story, by singing nursery rhymes and playing rhyming games. Also come and join us when we have our 'Sing and Stay' sessions.
