uses of aloe vera

Heartburn relief

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that often results in heartburn. A 2010 review suggested that consuming 1 to 3 ounces of aloe gel at mealtime could reduce the severity of GERD. It may also ease other digestion-related problems. The plant’s low toxicity makes it a safe and gentle remedy for heartburn.

Read more: Can you use aloe vera juice to treat acid reflux? »

Part 3 of 9

Keeping produce fresh

A 2014 study published online by the Cambridge University Press looked at tomato plants coated with aloe gel. The report showed evidence that the coating successfully blocked the growth of many types of harmful bacteria on the vegetables. Similar results were found in a different study with apples. This means that aloe gel could help fruits and vegetables stay fresh, and eliminate the need for dangerous chemicals that extend the shelf life of produce.

Part 4 of 9

An alternative to mouthwash

In a 2014 study published in the Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences, researchers found aloe vera extract to be a safe and effective alternative to chemical-based mouthwashes. The plant’s natural ingredients, which include a healthy dose of vitamin C, can block plaque. It can also provide relief if you have bleeding or swollen gums.

Part 5 of 9

Lowering your blood sugar

Ingesting two tablespoons of aloe vera juice per day can cause blood sugar levels to fall in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a study in Phytomedicine: International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacy. This could mean that aloe vera may have a future in diabetes treatment. These results were confirmed by another study published in Phytotherapy Research that used pulp extract.

But people with diabetes, who take glucose-lowering medications, should use caution when consuming aloe vera. The juice along with diabetes medications could possibly lower your glucose count to dangerous levels.

Part 6 of 9

A natural laxative

Aloe vera is considered a natural laxative. A handful of studies have looked into the benefits of the succulent to aid digestion. The results appear to be mixed.

A team of Nigerian scientists conducted a study on rats and found that gel made from typical aloe vera houseplants was able to relieve constipation. But another study by the National Institutes of Health looked at the consumption of aloe vera whole-leave extract. Those findings revealed tumor growth in the large intestines of laboratory rats.

In 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration required that all over-the-counter aloe laxative products be removed from the U.S. market or be reformulated.

The Mayo Clinic recommends that aloe vera can be used to relieve constipation, but sparingly. They advise that a dose of 0.04 to 0.17 grams of dried juice is sufficient.

If you have Crohn’s disease, colitis, or hemorrhoids you shouldn’t consume aloe vera. It can cause severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea. You should stop taking aloe vera if you’re taking other medications. It may decrease your body’s ability to absorb the drugs.

Part 7 of 9

Skin care

You can use aloe vera to keep your skin clear and hydrated. This may be because the plant thrives in dry, unstable climates. To survive the harsh conditions, the plant’s leaves store water. These water-dense leaves, combined with special plant compounds called complex carbohydrates, make it an effective face moisturizer and pain reliever.

Learn more: 9 healthy benefits of drinking aloe vera juice »

Part 8 of 9

Potential to fight breast cancer

A new study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine looked at the therapeutic properties of aloe emodin, a compound in the plant’s leaves. The authors suggest that the succulent shows potential in slowing the growth of breast cancer. However, more studies are needed to further advance this theory.

Part 9 of 9

The takeaway

There are a number of ways to use the aloe vera plant and the various gels and extracts that can be made from it. Researchers are continuing to discover new methods to put this succulent to use. Be sure to consult your doctor if you plan to use aloe vera in a medicinal manner, especially if you take medication.

The target market is generally based on friends and/ or family buying from the distributor. This is not limited though to the above mentioned, but also includes people that have the urge or need to better their lives by living more healthy and doing so in reaching out to products (like Forever Living Products) that could sustain and/or improve that kind of living. Because of the relative high pricing linked to these products, one would classify the core target market as middle to high income groups.

How to grow the Aloe Vera

Growing Aloe Vera is easy. Planting it is a little more tricky. Unlike other succulents and cacti, it is difficult to grow Aloe Vera from just a leaf. The chances of the leaf actually taking root and growing into a healthy plant are slim. Therefore, most gardeners plant Aloe Vera using offshoots, which tends to result in more successful plants.

Method One of Three:

Growing from a Leaf

1

Understand that a leaf may not form roots and grow. While it is possible to grow an Aloe Vera plant from a leaf, the chances of the leaf taking root are very slim.Aloe Vera leaves have a lot of moisture, and tend to rot before they can take root. Growing an Aloe Vera plant from an "offset" is more effective.

2

Find an aloe leaf that is at least 8 centimeters (3.15 inches) long.If this is not your personal plant, ask for the gardener's permission first.

3

Cut the leaf at the base using a sharp, clean knife. Try to cut at a downward angle, towards the stem. The knife must be very clean, or you risk infecting the leaf.

4

Leave the leaf some place warm, long enough for a film to form over the cut part. This can take as little a few days to as long as two weeks. This film will help keep the cut part from getting infected by the soil.An infected Aloe Vera leaf won't survive for very long.

5

Find a pot with a drain hole in the bottom. Like most plants, Aloe Vera likes water, but it hates to sit in it. If your pot does not have a drain hole, the soil will stay soaking wet. This can lead to root rot, which can kill a plant—including the hardy Aloe Vera.

6

Fill the pot with cactus soil, and dampen it with water. If you don't have any cactus soil, you can mix your own by mixing one part sand and one part potting soil.

Consider filling the bottom of your pot with gravel first. This will help the pot drain even more.

The pH level should be 6.0 to 8.0. If the pH is not high enough, add some gardening lime. You can buy it from a garden shop.

7

Stick the leaf cut-side-down into the soil. Make sure that about one-third of the leaf is in the soil.

Consider dipping the cut base in some sort of root hormone first. If you don't have any on hand, ground cinnamon or honey will work as well. Both will kill any bacteria.

8

Put the plant some place warm and sunny, and water it with care. For the first four weeks of so, you will want to keep the soil moist. Once the leaf is done transplanting, wait until the soil is completely dry before you water it again. To learn how to further care for your Aloe Vera, click here.

Don't worry if the leaf shrinks or dries while it is developing roots.

Method Two of Three:

Growing from an Offset

1

Find an offset. Offsets, also known as "pups" are part of the main plant. They are usually smaller and brighter in color. They will also have their own set of roots. Search for them along the base. Here are some things you should look for when selecting an offset to cut:

The offset should be one-fifth the size of the main plant.

Choose an offset that has at least four leaves, and is several inches tall.

2

Take the entire plant out of the pot, if you can. This will make it easier to find where the offshoot joins the main plant. You may have to brush the soil away from the roots to see the offshoot better. It may be attached to the main plant, but it should have its own set of roots.

3

Pry or cut the offshoot away from the main plant, but try to keep the roots intact. The offshoot may come away easily. If it doesn't, you will need to cut it using a sharp, clean knife. Let the wound scab over for a few days before you move on. This will prevent any infections.

The offshoot must have some roots attached to it.

Once you have pried the offshoot away from the main plant, you can put the larger plant back into its pot.

4

Find a pot with a drain hole at the bottom. This is very important. Like most plants, Aloe Vera likes water, but it hates sitting in it. If your pot does not have a drain hole, the soil will become waterlogged. This can lead to root rot, which can kill your Aloe Vera.

5

Fill the pot with cactus soil. If you don't have any cactus soil, mix one part sand with one part soil.

Consider filling the bottom of your pot with gravel first. This will help the pot drain even more.

The pH level should be 6.0 to 8.0. If the pH is not high enough, add some gardening lime. You can buy it from a gardening shop.

6

Make a small hole in the soil and stick the offshoot into it. The hole should be deep enough to fit the roots as well as one-fourth of the plant (from where the roots end, and upwards). Many expert gardeners recommend that you dip the roots in root growth hormone first, to help the roots grow faster.

7

Pat the soil around the plant, and water it. Water the plant enough so that the soil is damp, but not soaking. Aloe Vera is a desert plant, so it really does not need much water.

8

Place the plant in a sunny spot and wait one week before you water it again. After this, you can water your Aloe Vera like your normally would. To learn how to further care for your Aloe Vera.

Method Three of Three:

Caring for Your Plant

1

Make sure that your plant gets plenty of bright sunlight. Ideally, Aloe Vera should get 8 to 10 hours of sunlight each day. You can get this by placing it in a south or west-facing window. If necessary, move the plant from window to window throughout the day.

If it is cold where you live, move the plant away from the windows at night. These areas tend to get very cold, which can kill your plant.

2

Wait until the soil is completely dry before you water it again. When you do water the plant, make sure that the soil is completely soaked through. Also, make sure that the water is draining freely from the pot.Do not over-water your plant.

Aloe Vera tends to go dormant during the winter months. It won't need as much water.

Aloe Vera will need more water during the summer months, especially when it is hot and dry.

3

Fertilize once a year during spring. The fertilizer should be water-based, and heavy in phosphorus. Prepare the mix at half strength.

4

Watch out for bugs, disease, and fungus. Use a natural, organic pesticide to keep pests, such as mealy bugs and scale, at bay. You can avoid fungus easily simply by keeping the soil dry.

5

Watch the leaves. They are great indicators of health, and what your Aloe Vera needs.

Aloe vera leaves should be plump and straight. If you notice the leaves becoming thin and curly, give your Aloe Vera more water.

Aloe Vera leaves should grow straight up. If the leaves droop, the plant needs more sun.

6

Know what to do if your plant grows too slowly. Sometimes, Aloe Vera does not grow well. Fortunately, it is easy to figure out what is wrong. It is even easier to fix these common problems.

The soil is too damp. Water the plant less often.

The plant needs more sunlight. Move it to a sunnier spot.

You added too much fertilizer. Move the plant to a new pot and add more soil.

The soil might be too alkaline. Add some soil sulfur.

The plant doesn't have enough room for its roots. Move it to a bigger pot.

THE VALUES OF ALOE VERA IN BUSINESS

Aloe Vera as skin supplement
~The miracle skin saver
Your mom was onto something when she snipped off the tip of an aloe leaf and squeezed it onto your sunburn. The plant has been shown in studies to help heal minor wounds eight days faster than standard dressing, not to mention it’s an antibacterial and contains vitamins and minerals that can ease eczema and psoriasis flare-ups. But creative and enterprising beauty experts are using it for a lot more than the occasional cut or rash; they’re using it to get gorgeous, too. (Look more radiant than ever—and lose up to 25 pounds in 2 months with Prevention's new Younger In 8 Weeks plan!)

We collected experts’ completely natural aloe vera uses in these 10 DIY home recipes. To avoid added fragrance and dyes, look for 100% pure aloe vera gel. It’s available at most pharmacies and health food stores.

Aloe vera as foods and drinks~~
~~Q: What are the benefits of drinking aloe vera juice?

A: If you do a Google search for ‘aloe vera juice’ you’ll quickly conclude that drinking aloe vera juice is the ultimate healthy habit, as it seemingly aids in weight loss, digestion, immune function, and even ‘easing general discomfort’. But when you look beyond the first 40+ search results (all of the sites that list the amazing benefits of aloe vera juice just before they sell you an ongoing monthly supply), it’s a different, more accurate story.

What is interesting about aloe vera juice is that despite the huge marketing push to educate people on its benefits, there is very little scientific data to support its use in humans. What’s more, some of the toxicity research done in animals is alarming.

Information regarding aloe vera’s use dates back nearly 5,000 years to early Egyptian times. It has since been used both topically and orally. Aloe vera gel, found when you break open the green leafy skin, is often used topically to treat burns, abrasions, psoriasis, and other skin conditions. Aloe vera juice, primarily produced from the green outer leaf, was used as a main component in many over-the-counter laxatives until 2002, when the FDA pulled them from drugstore shelves due to insufficient information regarding their safety.

Safety concerns about drinking aloe vera juice have continued to grow after the release of the findings from a two-year study by the National Toxicology Program. According to this study, when researchers gave rats whole-leave extract of aloe vera juice, there was "clear evidence of carcinogenic activity in male and female rats, based on tumors of the large intestine."

Related: For dozens of healthy juice recipes that will help you slim down in 7 days, check out The Bikini Body Diet.

But before you go telling people that aloe vera causes cancer, there are a couple things to consider:

1. This study was done in animals. We don’t know what would happen in humans, but these negative results should be enough to make you proceed with caution until more information is available.

2. Consider what kind of aloe vera was used in this study. The researchers used non-decolorized, whole-leaf aloe vera extract. The way aloe vera is processed can impact the different compounds found in the plant and thus the impact on your body. For example, when manufacturers decolorize aloe vera leaf (a process in which the aloe vera is passed through a charcoal filter), the components that give aloe vera its laxative properties, the anthraquinones, are removed. One specific anthraquinone called Aloin is thought to be the driving force behind tumor development in the animal study.

But it's not all bad news for aloe vera juice. In a 2004 study from the U.K., researchers gave people with active ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, aloe vera gel to drink (remember that in the animal study, they used aloe vera juice, not gel). After four weeks of drinking aloe vera gel in water twice per day, there was a clinical response towards improvement and remission of ulcerative colitis, compared to those given plain water. No significant negative side effects were experienced due to drinking the aloe vera gel.

As you can see, the aloe vera story is not as clear cut as many drink labels want you to believe. My personal recommendation is that you should wait for more human research to show that aloe vera provides significant health benefits without negative side effects. If you do choose to drink aloe vera at this time, check with your doctor first, and then make sure that whatever product you use does not contain Aloin.

*Aloe vera in medicine field*
~Heartburn relief
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that often results in heartburn. A 2010 review suggested that consuming 1 to 3 ounces of aloe gel at mealtime could reduce the severity of GERD. It may also ease other digestion-related problems. The plant’s low toxicity makes it a safe and gentle remedy for heartburn.

~In a 2014 study published in the Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences, researchers found aloe vera extract to be a safe and effective alternative to chemical-based mouthwashes. The plant’s natural ingredients, which include a healthy dose of vitamin C, can block plaque. It can also provide relief if you have bleeding or swollen gums.

~Ingesting two tablespoons of aloe vera juice per day can cause blood sugar levels to fall in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a study in Phytomedicine: International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacy. This could mean that aloe vera may have a future in diabetes treatment. These results were confirmed by another study published in Phytotherapy Research that used pulp extract
~Aloe vera is considered a natural laxative.

~Potential to fight breast cancer
A new study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine looked at the therapeutic properties of aloe emodin, a compound in the plant’s leaves. The authors suggest that the succulent shows potential in slowing the growth of breast cancer. However, more studies are needed to further advance this theory.

Aloe Vera in business
Love our Aloe products, refer them to others … and … get paid for referrals
Forever Living Products’ structure is designed to let you be our marketing and sales force.
