Montesquieu

1. Montesquieu believed in these forms of government: monarchy, aristocracy, and republicanism. He preferred one where power is balanced among three separate branches, he called this government rule the "separation of powers". He was against absolute monarchy and believed that the success of a government depends on the right balance of power between different branches. He believed all women were weaker than men and much more gentler, which would make a good government. Men were more harsh and women were much more considerate in this way. And despite his religious tolerance he did not believe everyone was equal and approved of slavery.

2. People's role in government would be based on political virtue and equality. States would be kept small, making it easier for people to participate in government They would put the public's interests before their own, and each branch out of the three would limit the other two's power so that the freedom of the people would not be threatened and tyranny would be avoided. This was the most stable and secure way to him. He believed this separation of power would keep from all political power being handed to one branch and the greed and corruption inevitably taking place.

Thomas Hobbes

1. He believed in an absolute monarchy, a king or queen should have all power. He believed that all people are naturally selfish and constantly in a state of war due to all of us being equal and wanting to compete. For that reason societies are necessary, and the one ruling would be looked up to and have complete power like a leviathan. He didn't think a democracy would ever work because the citizens would all simply act on their own interests.

2. He believed all people should give up their power to the ruling people to ensure peace and to be protected. He didn't believe monarchs were chosen by God, instead he believed that monarchs work best when the people make a rational decision to give up their rights and power for the "leviathan". Since there is the possibility that the leviathan in charge would act on his/her own desires and be extremely selfish, there would be a group of representatives helping and informing the leviathan of important opinions. Of course though, the leviathan would always make the final decision. There would be no complete freedom and peace at the same time because it was impossible in his eyes. Complete freedom is complete greed and war, therefore for complete peace there must be well put societies.

1. The types of government Plato preferred was more Republican, as he highly resented democracy because he felt it was ignorant, and his close friend Socrates was condemned to death by a democratic government. He wanted his own ideal society most of all.
2. He wanted the best behavior of each citizen and each of them had their own role determined by talent. Education would be absolutely essential. He believed all of it would lead to a good and just life for society as a whole and would bring wisdom.

1. The types of government Aristotle preferred are monarchy, aristocracy, and constitutional rule. He believed democracy was the least dangerous, but didn't want individuals' talents over or under estimated.
2. He wanted a society ran where everyone was educated to be morally virtuous, and he wanted all citizens to participate in political society. He wanted middle class to have the most power. This was due to the arrogance of the rich and the vengefulness of the poor. Common good is more important than the individual good, without law and order humans become selfish and evil. It had to be a unified community, called a "polis".

1. King Louis XIV strongly agreed with absolutism, where he would have absolute power over France. He consistently exercised this power and always made final decisions. He believed in divine right, where all kings are chosen by God, and he believed that no matter how bad a king may be, anyone who revolted was considered criminal. This absolutism was supported by the Catholic Church, which heavily influenced Louis's rule. An absolute ruler had the most control and power, meaning no constitutions nor persons had the ability to control the absolute ruler.

2. As king, he would have to informed of everything going on in France, and he would always make the final decisions. He would have sole power over foreign policies, how much money France spent, what battles would be fought, and he could choose to keep whatever he pleased secret. He was only responsible to God and not the people. This absolutism was a philosophy of divine right, and Louis felt that religious unity contributed to the rule as well.
