GOLD- he became a pilot for one of the best flying schools in Russia, he wanted to a very good pilot, there was only one catch. He was 5’2” which made it hard to see the runway while landing. The school wanted to expel him because of his lack of landing skills. He got his seat fixed to make him see better. He became one of the best at the school.
COMPARE/CONTRAST- Christopher Columbus had to find a country to fund him to go on this trip, while Gagarin had to find a way to fix his landing.

GLORY- During this time, Russia was against the Americas to race to see who could get men into space first. Lots of countries were trying to have the most control and to have the most, power, land and leaders.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- Columbus was sailing for Spain, to try to find a way to India, but he found islands south of Florida instead. Cuba was controlled by Spain for a long time. Spain made their country known by having control over land across the Atlantic.

Humans can survive an Orbit in space: No person had been in space before. In fact, the spaceship was fully controllable by the Mission Control. The audio clip I had found during the flight, they were talking almost the whole time.
Compare/Contrast: When Columbus went sailing, it had been used for transportation many times before. Sailing was supposedly ‘invented’ 5500 BC.
Instantly Famous: Yuri became famous for being the first man in space. Meeting Queen Elizabeth II, and earning many awards in many different countries.
Compare/Contrast: Both Columbus and Yuri Gagarin became famous for their voyages. Columbus, it took a while because communication was limited in 1492. Yuri Gagarin, it took only days for him to become worldwide famous.
More Expeditions: many more things are being explored in space today, we have only seen small parts. When Gagarin went into space, it changed many opinions and that we could do many things outside our atmosphere.
Compare/Contrast: boats were the main type of transportation is now used every day. Boats and types of transportation are changing every day. It is also considered the safest way to travel. We can also use underwater transportation as well. Space travel and water-based travel have both evolved very much since these expeditions.

Quotes- “I looked and looked but I didn’t see God.” (Gagarin, 1961) “The path of a cosmonaut is not an easy, triumphant march to glory, as some people make it out to be. You have to put in a lot of work, a lot of sweat, and have to get to know the meaning not just of joy but also of grief, before being allowed in the spacecraft cabin.” (Gagarin, 1968)
Compare/Contrast: in the first one, he talked about his recent experience of being in space, not seeing what he thought he might have seen, heaven or God. When he said the second one, it was a while after his expedition. He was researching a lot afterward about his own job and what he had learned while he was in space.

Left Behind- Sergei Korolev was the main architect and creator of Vostok 1, it didn’t even have an engine, which made it very hard to land, it wasn’t released until 10 years later that he ejected and parachuted down to earth afterward. Yuri was told that he would be controlling most of the flight until the day of launch.
Today- Nasa is planning on sending people beyond the moon, and be able to bring them back to earth. Both launching and landing on U.S. soil. Those astronauts will be building things for future launches and missions in the long run.
Took- Gagarin took lots of information from being on a space travel that lasted 108 minutes. He once said that he was looking for heaven or God, which was unsuccessful. He saw much of the earth. The Vostok was fully functional from Moscow, even through space. Gagarin controlled it through most of the flight.
Today- Space missions happen all the time now. We even have a station in space called the international space station. There has been talk of shutting it down. Space expeditions now have better engines. Making better and safer landings on any terrain.

Effect- seeing if the US or Russia could get a human into space first about space, it also had to do with politics. They were trying to see who could gain more knowledge about space first. Who could get there first won the more power over knowledge?
Middle ages- during the time of the middle ages, all the politics were VERY religious. Things were very simple on who could rule and who could teach about the Bible.
Effect- We found out many different things about space. Vostok was going 17,000 miles per hour, the recorded speed to get out of earth’s gravitational pull is 25,039 miles per hour. Nasa found that out and could send astronauts to the moon.
Middle ages- In the middle ages horses were the main type of transportation. Horses gallop at 25-30 mph if there was a long distance of traveling it would be mainly by boat and some horse. Citizens would bring their horses on boats for shorter distances or if they couldn’t go by boat.
Effect- Since Yuri’s space travel was only 108 minutes long, he didn’t have to eat during the flight. He only had a small bathroom next to him on the Vostok 1. Afterward, the question arose ‘Can humans eat in space?’ Gherman Titov, the next human in line to go to space from Russia. His mission lasted a little more than a day. Titov ended up having a bad case of “Space Sickness” and had to get used to space.
Middle ages- Medicine in the middle ages was based on greek tradition. They believed that blood was controlled by the four elements (fire, water, air, and earth). Cupping and Leeching were very important rituals to keep the body and mind healthy during this time.
