Rohingya refugees expelled from Burma 

(Myanmar) their homeland. Life in the centre is poor, dehumanising and depressing. The people who are forced to live there are treated like prisoners, especially by some of the guards, and it is not surprising that many people lose hope. Subhi  survives with his imagination and love of story, as he waits patiently for his father to join them at the camp. Life begins to get to him when his best friend Eli is moved to another complex as he is deemed a ‘troublemaker’. Subhi meets 

Jimmie, a girl from the outside who is also 

grieving her beloved mother. She wants Subhi to read her mother’s book of stories to her and they develop a loyal friendship. Jimmie tells Subhi about the outside world which opens his mind, as he has never been outside the detention centre. Finally, the climate turns and people’s patience runs out as they have no hope for a future.

When tensions build up, people began to act with protests and hunger strikes, leading to a complete breakdown, followed by the possibility that things may change for the better.

PG 27 chapter 4

Jimmie's family had moved around a lot and Jimmie explores around thinking about how others might of thought while being where she was and doing what she was doing. Max (Jimmie's friend) says he saw a container full of bikes come into the detention centre which confused Jammie as her mum used to talk about how terrible the detention centre used to be leading to Jammie not knowing who to trust. Jammie hears the wind while trying to go to bed and it sounds off. She goes out and explores and past a gum tree she sees Jonah, the person who had taught her how to explore.
