As well as this, he had a mother that was stuck in an unhappy marriage; as a result, she was highly invested in her son.

Eventually, Williams agent Audrey Wood managed to secure him a $1,000 ($21,000 today) grant from the Rockefeller foundation to create his play "Battle of Angels." Unfortunately the play was very poorly received. Using the rest of the Rockefeller funds he moved to the French quarter of New Orleans to work for the Works Process Administration (WPA). Although the Rockefeller grant may have seemed like a failure, it brought him to the attention of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio. They gave him a six-month contract as a screen writer for $250 ($5,500 today) a week. During the winter of 1944 he would create is first great success in the play "The Glass Menagerie." The play became an instant hit and won the award for the best play of the season, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award.
