Secondly, we helped increase demand among civil society organizations in the region so they could advocate themselves for this policy and programmatic shift.

The beauty of collaborating with PAHO and other key organizations is that beyond advocacy, the coalition could offer hands-on support with policy development, pilot roll-out, transition from pilots to national programmes, procurement etc.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence is a public campaign led by UNFPA in Lao PDR in cooperation with UN agencies and other stakeholders. The campaign is very popular and is implemented yearly. Working as the Comms person for RCO, I work closely with UNFPA and encourage UNCG in the country to support the campaign. We run the campaign through videos and photos on Facebook which is the most popular social media channels in Laos. We organized talks at large and small scales. We invite KoLs and leaders to join the campaign and share their views through videos. We work with media to spread the campaign messages through op-eds and articles.

By agreeing our field perspective we were able to steer our mini-campaign through the choppy seas of HQ in record time, and we also go considerable media pickup. Furthermore, it allowed us to address the difficult topic of counter-trafficking and people-smuggling.

A recent one was the organization of a media visit by international journalists to Somalia to cover the impact of the ongoing severe drought conditions in the country.
We started by developing a joint drought advocacy strategy highlighting a harmonized understanding of the context, based on the Key messages that we developed jointly on the drought situation. We also agreed on the areas most affected hence requiring media attention and also hon the support needed by each agency. 
We held several planning meetings and also agreed on the division of responsibilities and sharing of expenses. 
The mission was successful, conducted in the context of the "One UN Approach" and it helped raised attention and visibility to the crisis, which subsequently resulted in additional resources for the emergency-not sufficient but a good start. 
Working together with one voice is indeed critical in ensuring that the response is well understood and that coordination of the efforts is done in a strategic way to avoid the pitfalls of duplication and wastage of resources. The second example is collaborating at the UN Hub in Expo Dubai 2020. An example of an excellent collaboration was for World Gastronomy Day last year. While UNDP is not usually associated with the day, we took the chance in working together with both FAO and WFP in creating a dedicated episode on a popular Sri Lankan Food YouTube channel to highlight the importance of preparing healthy and nutritious curries, with minimum wastage using renewable or sustainable energy. Each agency played to its strengths and provided input on their expertise. From UNDP, a biogas cooker which had been introduced to the market through a flagship project was used in the preparation of the dish. Comms focal points worked together from inception phase, identifying and liaising with the YouTuber, providing key messages we required to be covered, and thereafter promoting the video among staff and networks.
