In a blog by Jamie Hale, Understanding Research Methodology 5: Applied and Basic Research, she says one example is the discovery of x-rays which led doctors to study bone fractures"(Hale).

Applied research bases its foundation of taking the results of a scientific experiment and using it in real world situations. "A example of applied research in a real world situation is investigating which treatment approach is most effective for reducing anxiety" (Cherry).
