I really can't say I was surprised by anything. I am always a little overwhelmed by the breadth of the standards. But in analyzing each standard according to how well we cover it, we get ideas for how to better cover it.

You always feel like you are meeting the standards but also worried that you may not be touching on standards as well as you should. It was surprising to see that we are actually meeting most of them better than I thought. There is always room for improvement and we will continue to build on our program.

My surprise was found under the Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Standard 5.7 Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g. graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth poem). I had difficulty deciphering what main idea this is getting at ..... I asked Jill when she was here and she was having a bit of difficulty with it also. She had me read it to her 3-5 times. If we don't even understand fully what it is saying... how are we to teach students to ANALYZE it?
