So far, I have complete 10 hours worth of interning at Tomecek Studio Architecture with their owner, Brad Tomecek. Next, I will begin to draft a building by looking through architecture magazines for inspiration. I will draw the basic design of the building on paper. So far, an issue I've had has been finding an architect that would let me shadow them, but this is an issue that I've overcome by persisting and "bugging" as many architects as I could. Something I've learned so far is that if I want to achieve something in the professional world, I have to be persistent with what I want.

Art is my number one passion. I often find myself doodling in between tasks and painting at least weekly. For this reason, architecture is fascinating to me. It is a way of implementing art in the real world in a practical sense. That’s why I dream to do architecture for a living. For my senior summit, I plan to make a three dimensional model of a home or high rise building that I design myself. Doing this, I will learn how to use design and engineering components to create something of my own.

This project has both academic and personal benefits for me. Since this is what I want to study in college, so doing this project will give me some base experience. This is a personal benefit for me, as well, because I find the topic, itself, fascinating.

I’ve never designed a building model before, so this is a stretch of my current knowledge. I already know a good deal about architecture, but I will be applying this knowledge in a new way in order to create my project. I will have to learn how to use a design program and how to select and assemble materials in models.

For me, the physical completion of my model will be how I measure success. Once I complete the model, my goal will have been reached, as this is something I have never done before. Learning how to do this and have a basic knowledge in doing this will be something I will be proud to have done.

I have recently started to work on my draft. I decided to draw my blueprint by hand because one thing Mr. Tomecek told me I need to know as an architect is how to draw. Anyone with an undergraduate architecture degree knows how to use digital drafting software, but few people in the industry can draft by hand. This is perfect for me when it comes to this project in particular because I can't afford drafting software. For this design, I want to draw inspiration from one of the designs I saw at my internship. It was a house in Cherry Creek designed by the same architect who designed Red Rocks. Tomecek's firm's mission was to make a few adjustments to the design of the house to better fit in with today's design. The house had an upstairs balcony that is accessible from two rooms on either side, and I want to incorporate this sort of idea into my design.

Upon further editing to my design, I've decided I want to place model on a mountain or inclined street. I remember seeing models like this at Tomecek Studio, and it really caught my eye. Through observing these models, I will be able to modify my building to lay in with nature. I'm really interested in making manmade structures and nature one. I find it really interesting how Burnham Hoyt incorporated rocks into buildings at Red Rocks and the premise around Art Nouveau style architecture and design, which is all about finding harmony between the building and the natural components around it.

As a really indecisive person, I’ve, once again, decided to completely change my design. At first, I was going for kind of a contemporary suburban style, after which I decided on a modern mediterranean feel. I began working on a paper draft for the model, and I decided I didn’t like how it looked. Making a model of a uniform white stucco house sounded a little mundane to me. Now, I’ve settled on a modern victorian house on an inclined street. My inspirations are the painted lady houses in San Francisco. I plan on spinning this theme with a modern twist. For my model, I will attempt to place my house on a slopes surface much like the homes in San Francisco. In addition, I will make the house narrow with at least two stories in order to accommodate for the little amount of real estate in big cities (the landscape I imagine for my house) but with enough comfortable living space for a family.

I went online to find materials that I will need for my model, and a lot of these are things I can find at Home Depot or Lowes, which are still open. So, for now, it appears as though I can still do this. https://ourpastimes.com/the-best-materials-for-building-house-models-12490508.html

In an attempt to build my model, I was able to build a barebones version of the house. It’s more like a three dimensional blueprint, as opposed to a finished architectural model. I learned that, while under lockdown, I am not equipped to complete this project. Once this situation ends, I do plan on continuing my design in order to complete it with realistic textured roofing, flooring, walls, and landscaping. I learned that I also don’t have enough experience and instruction to create a model like this on my own. I did some research on how to build a model of this sort, but it didn’t turn out the way I hoped that it would. This is not something that completely discourages me though because through this process, I did learn a lot more about the field I plan to study and work in, and I became even more excited about it. I am going to major in architecture staring next year, so I will be able to learn a lot more about how to do everything I was struggling with during this project.
