Small Gateway to Sweetness: Dessert with A Touch of Natural Flavor (Week 3)

Name: Mohd Zulkarnain bin Zainal Abidin
Matric Number: A180421
Date: 17-19 July, 22-23 July 2023

2. Your progress so far
Similarly as last week, the sale has been ongoing well with not much problem. From Monday to Wednesday, I still conducted it at the village marketplace, and at the end of each day, 50 dessert boxes are sold.

I could not proceed with the sale on Thursday since I needed to bring my mother for her doctor appointment and was worn out the day after. Hence, I took the initiative to promote the desserts online via WhatsApp during the weekend, where I sold 40 boxes of dadih and 10 boxes of cheesekut on both days. I was a bit hesitant at first, worried that no one will buy them. But, since I have already asked for a few customers' phone numbers last week, including my nearby neighbors, promoting it online was a good experience for me.

At the end of this third week, I did update my sales report so I am aware of all the expenditure and revenue so far. Up till now, it's looking good and steady.

One thing to point out from this week, I am delighted to be reminded by my brother that I should ask for feedback from my customers on how the dessert tasted to their likings or any other comments. Of all the people that I asked, most of them mentioned that the desserts are delicious and have the taste of original fruits (for clarification, I did use real mangoes, corns and pandan leaves for this). A few shared that they wished to have smaller spoon to scoop the dessert out of the small box and I have taken note of that because I just got whatever dessert spoon that was available at the nearby mini-market previously.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
Before entering the third week, I was a bit worried since I forgot my mother's coming doctor's appointment (thought it will be next month) and I do realize that completing my sale is important too. But then, family comes first and I cannot win it all, at least for now. So, I decided to have the sales ongoing online, and I am now relieved that it went fine.

Worth mentioning, I've learned that it is important to interact with my customers or in real life, people in my surrounding, to prevent myself from being narcissistic or self-absorbed without recognizing others' point of view, which many times, opinions that actually will help us improve indefinitely.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
I learned a lot from my family members, neighbors and close friends. Starting with the basics and going up to selling the desserts, I became more proficient in decision making skill where I realized the importance of small matters that will have an effect to the bigger picture at the end. For instance, I never thought of using a cheaper evaporated creamer affecting the dessert taste, making it a bit bland, compared to using one that differs by a few cents in price but gives a creamier and pleasant flavor.

From there, I acknowledged that it is vital to take great consideration of the decision I am about to make, starting from the trivial matters. And so, throughout my Elective Posting journey, from choosing the dessert ingredients, preparation time, and even to handing them to the customers, I tried my best to provide a great service and give them their money's worth.

When I got confused while choosing materials, I would think of the pros and cons to select one instead of the other. Whenever I feel disorientated when entering the data for the sales report, I'd ask my older sister for solutions, which reminds me that the skill of decision-making is also built from the mind and help of others.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
Before moving from one week to another, I have set up a schedule regarding the kind of things to do and cover for the week. That way, I have a very clear view of what I will be going through and to fulfill the daily 8-hour requirement for this elective posting. The preparation time usually takes up to 3 hours at most, and I would usually have the sale going up to 5 or 6 hours. I personally don't really feel this is a big workload since the marketplace is not far away from my house, and I get to spend some time in between playing guitar and have started learning how to do song covers using the BandLab application. Plus, I honestly enjoy selling the desserts mostly because I had a good time connecting with the villagers here and my ex-schoolmates. One more thing, I did time myself to ensure, again, that I fulfill the daily 8-hour requirement. Therefore, I believe that I have managed my time well throughout my Elective Posting journey, and what is more important, it has been a fun time so far.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
One thing to keep in mind, I will provide smaller spoons as recommended by my customers. Apart from that, the sale will still be up for 5 days just like in the second and third weeks, with the addition of spending my weekend by completing the sales report while preparing my final submission in video form.

Your progress so far
This week I also receive orders to bake some chocolate chip muffins, this is not in our menu but we also bake customized cakes and desserts if customers request from us. We follow customer's request and she is very satisfied with the muffins. Hence, I decided to add this muffins into my menu so that customers have more choice to choose.
However, last week one of the customers also gives me feedback that the birthday cakes I baked was a bit too sweet for her. I think I should adjust the sweetness next time based on customer's taste.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I feel quite satisfied for my this week's work because I have tried to do new menu based on the surroundings' changes. I am also happy because there is customers willing to trust me although that is my first time to bake chocolate chip muffins and willing to give me feedback so that I can refer to these feedback to improve in the future.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
I learn decision making when I have too much orders in that particular day. I found that if I collect too much orders, I cannot handle it and need to get help from my mother. Hence, I decide to design a poster and state in the poster which day I was available to collect orders and which day the orders already full.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I make a timetable for myself according to the customer's appointed time for example I will assume I use 3 hours to prepare and bake the cakes so I will start the preparation at least 5 hours before the appointed time. I also will control the amount of orders so that I wont miss any orders or cannot sent the orders on time due to too much workload and short of time.
I post the timetable on the business instagram so that all the customers know which day have available slot.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
Next week, I plan to make a sales report to record this 4 week's business so that I am more clear about my business in term of the finance and the data. This can give me a more clear picture to know my whole progress whether is good or need to make any changes to help my business grow well.

Name: Ganiya Saravanen
Matric Number : A180836
Date : 9 - 16 July 2023

2. Your progress so far
The progress this week has been steady and good. While preparing for our pop-up this week, I learnt more on food safety and management. Among the few important things I learnt was the importance of keeping the food warm throughout the market time. Apart from the delight of having warm food, the more important reason was to make sure that the food doesn't go bad.

Another important food aspect was the food sneeze guard. It keeps the food from being contaminated by the customers by having a barrier between the food and the customers. It was also interesting to learn that stalls with cooking equipment are required to have a fire extinguisher at all times to use in times of emergency. It may seem like a no-brainer but I've never seen a fire extinguisher at the stalls back at Malaysia.

For this week's pop up, it was at a local brewery. We had to come up with food that would go along with the drinks. Our menu for the day was Briyani, Roti Canai and Ham Chim Peng. Business was relatively slower than our previous markets since it was a Sunday but we were still able to make decent sales.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
To be honest, a slow business day didn't feel good at all. I was already doing the math in my head, seeing if our sales at least covered our cost for the day. And while it did at least cover that much, we had to figure out what to do with all the remaining food. It was sad seeing all the effort we put in cooking the food and to have it not sell a lot. We decided to give some food to the brewery owners who gave a few bottles in exchange. The remaining food we had for lunch the next day and so thankfully it wasn't wasted.

Having a slow day made me realize the risks of having a food business and I'm still thinking of a way to avoid any possible future food wastage.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
Having a business sure does call for a lot of decision making. One of the few instances where we have to make decisions is deciding how much food to cook for the day. Depending on multiple factors like the weather, location and the menu, we can more or less figure out how much food to cook for the day. For example, when we sell Nasi Lemak, we always bring extra uncooked rice just in case it runs out and there are customers who still want it. It has helped a few times where we would cook the rice there, just in time to sell more.

Another important part where decision making plays a role is setting the price. We try to make as much profit while making sure we don't overprice it. We have to make sure that it covers the overhead cost, ingredient and packaging costs. Since it is homemade, customers are more willing to pay a higher price too.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I manage my time by planning things earlier on. Especially the few days before the market, we buy the ingredients needed for the menu that week. To make sure we don't have to rush or wake up too early on the day of the market, we prep a few things the night before like packing peanuts for our nasi lemak and making sure we have enough containers for the business.
On the day of the market, we start cooking 4/5 hours before, load the car with the things we need and make sure to be at the spot about an hour earlier so we can take our time to set it up.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
My plan for next week is to work on the sales report for the whole month. Working on the sales report will help me reflect on the days where business was good and find out more on what affects a good and bad sales day.

~Banana Chips~ Week 3

Name : Siti Nurliyana binti Mohd Yazid

Matric Number : A182078

Date : 7 August 2023 – 11 August 2023

2. Your progress so far
Throughout week 3, I managed to get a bunch of bananas. However, after packaging process, I got only 13 containers of banana chips. Now I know that a bunch of ‘Pisang Nipah’ and a bunch of ‘Pisang Tanduk’ produce different amounts, with the 'Pisang nipah' producing less than 'Pisang Tanduk'. Luckily, my aunt was pleasant to recommend my business to her colleague. Therefore, I managed to sell most to my aunt’s colleague.

There was one time when I made banana chips and, unfortunately, I was unable to sell them. The taste was oily and not crispy. I also wondered why the peeling process was so much easier at the time and I noticed the bananas were not sticky. Apparently, the bananas which was shown in the picture were not mature enough to be made into banana chips. At that time, the banana that was already fried almost filled half of the large container (about 30 cm tall) where I usually kept the banana chips before packaging them.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I relieved that someone still wants to buy my banana chips. I was also grateful and happy when my customer gave a positive feedback of the banana chips. I noticed that the average age of people who bought the banana chips were around the middle age. Nowadays, banana chips are competing with many other trendy and various attractive foods. Thus, I hope banana chips can be one of the popular snacks among the younger generation.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
Many decisions must be made in business. For example, how many containers or packets of cooking oil were required to avoid waste. Aside from that, the most important is when I have to decide whether or not to sell the unsavoury banana chips the last time considering the cost, source, energy, and time. However, I learned that in business, we must be sincere and ensure that all of our customers are satisfied. Lastly, on how I decide to promote my product to let many people know the existence of the banana chips.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
Typically, I will spend one to two hours in the farm looking for a matured banana and doing some gardening. Making banana chips takes longer because I am still a beginner. As a result, I divided my time between peeling and frying. I spent two hours peeling and another two hours frying and packaging. By doing this, I was less stressed and able to complete this EP with ease. Then, I will devote my time to the sales process by promoting the banana chips on social media. I believe I manage my time wisely because this EP is progressing as planned.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
My plan for next week is I will proceed my business as usual and I would like to ensure that at least someone around my age want to buy the banana chips.

A customer requested a lemon cake with frosting. I usually do not take custom orders as the current menu is already a handful as it is but I was feeling up to the challenge this week. Thankfully, the customer was very delighted with the cake. I also took orders for my current menu throughout the whole week as usual.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I feel very happy with the progress I have made for the past 3 weeks. I was a little scared of taking a custom order but I am glad that my customer trusted me with it and was very satisfied with it. This made me become more open to take other custom orders and maybe one day add more items to the menu.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

As the business is a one-man show, I am responsible for all the decisions made. Everything from the menu, the price, promotion ideas, taking orders and everything else in between. However, I do still get insights and advice from others and put them into consideration.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Throughout this EP journey I have a schedule I stick to. All orders are freshly baked in the morning. I also took the liberty to use delivery services to deliver my orders and stock my ingredients every Sunday. This is to ensure I am not overwhelmed with everything else during the time I spend on taking and baking orders. Apart from that I also have a limit of orders I take per day.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

I plan to take my orders as usual and complete my sales report to get a whole view of my business throughout EP.

Name: Michelle Tan Momoka
Matric Number: A179979
Date: 7 August 2023 - 13 August 2023

2. Your progress so far
This week, I started selling secondhand stuff. I began by making sure things were good before taking pictures. Then, I took them to a market where I set up a booth. It was at a night market in Bukit Mertajam. My aunt sells balloons there, so I joined in. On Instagram, I told people when and where I'd be selling. I also told my friends and family on WhatsApp. Everything went pretty smoothly, but I didn't sell as much as I hoped. So, I decided to sell the rest of the clothes online. Some people who liked my clothes were far away, so I took clear pictures and videos to show the condition. I put these on Instagram and answered people's questions when they messaged me. Once they paid, I sent them the things they bought. Overall, things were good, but I didn't make a lot of sales. So, I'm trying to get more people to know about my Instagram page by asking my family and friends to help.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I had fun trying out physical selling for the first time. Whether I talked to customers face-to-face or on Instagram, it was enjoyable. But selling used things was tougher than I expected. There's a lot I need to get better at to make my business grow.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
Making choices was a big part of my elective posting journey. It started with deciding what to do. One important choice was deciding how much to charge for things. I couldn't just pick any price. I had to think about things like how good they were, what kind they were, and who made them. I had to set prices that made sense and explain why I chose them. This taught me that decisions should have good reasons and be compared to other options.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I made a plan for myself from the first week. It helped me stay on track. I tried to be online during regular work hours to answer questions on Instagram. But I also went online when I had free time. I set aside time to look for info, make ads, post them, take pictures, and pack things. Even small stuff, like setting prices, got a place on my schedule. So far, I think I'm doing pretty well with managing my time.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
For the next week, I'm going to keep selling my preloved items. I'll also send out the things people bought and give some of the money I make to the people who gave me the things to sell. The most important thing now is making sure online buyers get their things okay. I'll be keeping track of the packages to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Name: Audrey Pauline Munoz
Matric number: A173415
7 August 2023 - 11 August 2023

Your progress so far
Progress has been good for this week's EP. This week's menu was garlic fried rice with chicken rendang and nasi ayam masak kicap ala tiga budak gemok. Most of this week's customers were repeating customers, with a total of 42 orders for both days.

Your feelings and thoughts
I was glad that this week's customers were mostly repeating customers, it meant that they have been liking their food so far and continued to show their support. However the numbers for this week's orders is relatively lower compared to the previous weeks, it made me wonder if some of the previous customers were not satisfied with their previous orders or if this week's menu was not appealing for them.

How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
As a small business, every single tiny details are very important to consider. The menu and prices are few of the main decisions that needed to be made throughout this EP. With the help of a friend who also has their own business in selling food, I was able to learn on how to set the appropriate prices.

How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
Selling days are only on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week. On other days when I am not selling, I would go grocery shopping and prep all the ingredients needed for the menus.

Name: Ong Zhi Zhung
Matric Number: A182841
Date: 3 August 2023 - 11 August 2023

2. Your progress so far

Video Lectures: I successfully finalised all the learning material for the course, and I recorded the final two video lectures. After recording, I edited and reviewed all 10 video lectures to ensure high-quality content. I was impressed that the total course duration has reached an impressive 27 hours.

Digital Textbook: To enhance user experience, I organised all course content into a single digital textbook. I also implemented a clickable navigation pane for seamless navigation through the PDF.

Advertising Website: I started the development of the advertising website for the Math Olympiad course. I have included the course structure, reasons for choosing my course, and FAQ on the website.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I felt really relieved as the completion of the entire video course after approximately two months of intensive preparation is a true milestone. The journey was marked by tiredness and stress, yet the satisfaction derived from seeing the finished product is truly gratifying. I was looking forward to the final phase of my EP, which involves course launching and promotional activities.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Throughout my EP journey, I faced a lot of critical decisions. From selecting the course topics to determining content depth, choosing recording and editing tools, and structuring the textbook – each choice significantly influenced the project.

An important lesson I learned is that in situations with no clear answer, it is beneficial to make a decision and adapt. For instance, placing the subtopic "Triangular Number" under Chapter 6 "Sequence and Series" or Chapter 7 "Inductive Reasoning," was challenging task due to overlap. I initially made the decision to place it under Chapter 7, but after some deeper preparation I realised Chapter 6 was better suited. This experience highlighted the value of making decisions, where even if a decision did not yield the optimal outcome, I can still learn from the mistake, and this encourages me to make decisions more confidently in future.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Firstly, realising that the project's completion might take a long time, I began working on it as early as June. This early start ensured that the project could be finished by the due date, avoiding last-minute rush and stress.

Secondly, I found that breaking big tasks into smaller steps was important. This approach made the work less overwhelming. For instance, when creating learning materials, I divided the process into researching, content writing, and error-checking. This method made each part more manageable and motivated me to work on it consistently, without feeling overwhelmed.

Lastly, staying adaptable was also important. Unexpected challenges came up, and this is where flexibility played a key role. One example was when technical issues delayed my video recording. Instead of panicking, I adjusted my schedule and focused on other tasks. This ensures steady progress.

6. Your plan for next week (Phase 4)

I will create a YouTube video introducing Math Olympiad and promoting my Math Olympiad Online Course. I will then officially launch the course and make it available for purchase.

Your progress so far

During week 3 of my home-based cinnamon roll business, I've seen some promising progress. Ive had an increase in sales compared to week 2, which is encouraging. Customer feedback has been positive, with many praising the taste and freshness of my cinnamon rolls. I've also fine-tuned my marketing strategy by focusing more on social media by making videos, tiktok and constant posts on instagram which has resulted in higher engagement and online orders. Overall, I am steadily growing, and I'm excited.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

Emotionally, I'm feeling both excited and challenged. It's thrilling to see the sales grow, and the positive customer feedback has boosted my confidence in my product. However, there's also a sense of pressure to maintain this momentum and continue delivering the same level of quality.

I'm constantly thinking about ways to improve efficiency in my operations. Managing a home-based business can be demanding, especially in terms of balancing work and personal life. It's a journey filled with ups and downs, but the passion for baking and the satisfaction of seeing happy customers keep me motivated.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Over the past three weeks of selling cinnamon rolls from my home, I've learned and applied several valuable decision-making skills. First and foremost, I've developed a better understanding of market demand. Analyzing sales data and customer feedback has allowed me to make informed decisions about the quantity and types of cinnamon rolls to produce each day.

Additionally, I've honed my pricing strategy by considering ingredient costs, competition, and customer willingness to pay. This involved making decisions on setting the right price point to ensure profitability while remaining competitive.

Furthermore, I've made choices about marketing and promotional activities. Experimenting with various marketing channels such as tiktok, instagram and whatsapp, and assessing their effectiveness has been instrumental in shaping my advertising decisions.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Managing my time during these past three weeks has been crucial to the success of my home-based cinnamon roll business. Initially, I established a daily routine to balance baking, marketing, and administrative tasks. I wake up early to prepare the dough and let it rise while attending to other responsibilities.

During the baking process, I've become more efficient by streamlining my workflow. For example, I've learned to multitask by preparing fillings and toppings while the dough is rising or baking. This has allowed me to increase my production capacity without sacrificing quality.

In the evenings, I dedicate time to delivering the cinnamon rolls. I properly plan my trip to ensure that they arrive as soon as possible.

Balancing work and personal life has been a challenge, but I've learned the importance of setting boundaries. I make sure to schedule breaks to recharge and spend time with family.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For the upcoming week, my plan is to continue following the same successful approach that has been working well for the past three weeks. This means maintaining the consistency in the quality of my cinnamon rolls, the pricing strategy, and the marketing efforts that have yielded positive results.

I will continue to offer the same popular flavors that customers have come to love, which is biscoff and nutella. This consistency is essential in building a loyal customer base who know they can rely on us for their favorite treats.

Regarding pricing, I'll keep it unchanged for now since it aligns with the cost structure and customer expectations. This stability helps build trust with my customers, and they appreciate knowing what to expect.

In terms of marketing, I'll stick with the current strategies that have been effective. This includes posting regularly on social media, engaging with customer comments and inquiries promptly, and sharing behind-the-scenes content to connect with my audience.

Your progress so far
This week's theme was all about embracing the unique tastes and desires of my customers, allowing them to order whatever they wanted. This approach was not only a chance to showcase my baking skills but also an opportunity to learn and grow as an entrepreneur.

The week began with a wonderful variety of orders coming in. People wanted biscoff cheesecake, a fusion of delicious biscoff cookies and creamy cheesecake. Next, i also received some requests for red velvet cake, a dessert that's not just delicious but also stunning with its deep red color. Brownies and butter cake, simple yet beloved classics, were also part of the lineup. Then there were the brookies – a fun combination of brownies and cookies, offering the best of both desserts. Lastly, the fruit tarts!! The combination of the crispy shell, creamy filling, and fresh fruits makes them a yummy and pretty treat!

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I was excited to try new things and make treats that people really wanted. I learned a lot as I mixed ingredients and baked. Seeing the finished desserts made me proud and happy. Sometimes, I was curious about how things would turn out, but when I saw smiles from customers, it made me feel really good inside. I also realized that baking is a way to connect with people's celebrations, and that made me feel warm and connected. Overall, it was a week full of excitement, learning, and a lot of happiness.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
As I received different orders for biscoff cheesecake, red velvet cake, brownies, butter cake, brookies, and fruit tarts, I had to carefully decide how to approach each order. I had to think about which flavors would work well together, how to balance textures, and what kind of presentation would make each dessert look appealing.

In the process, I learned to analyze the characteristics of each dessert and consider how to make them taste and look their best. This involved thinking critically about the ingredients I had, the techniques I knew, and how different elements would interact with each other.

Applying decision-making skills meant that I had to make choices confidently and thoughtfully. I weighed the pros and cons of each option, considering factors like taste, appearance, and the preferences of my customers. It was about finding the right balance between following traditional recipes and adding my own creative twist.

There were times when I had to make quick decisions, especially when multitasking or adjusting recipes on the spot. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I started by creating a clear plan for the week, outlining what needed to be accomplished each day. This plan included not only the baking process but also prep work like gathering ingredients and equipment, and post-baking tasks like packaging and delivery.

I ranked the orders based on their complexity and the time needed for each. This helped me focus on more intricate orders without neglecting simpler ones, ensuring that everything got the attention it deserved.

While I had a schedule in place, I also remained open to adjustments.
