The average cost of housing federal inmates is $27,549 while the average cost for aging prisoners with medical needs is $58,956. The aging prison population is costing the taxpayers more money since a lot of the older inmates have health conditions that need to be treated. Many prisons are having to set up a geriatric ward just to hold the older inmates. The article argues that these inmates should be considered for early release since a lot of them are in prison for low level drug crimes and research has shown that it is substantially less likely for the old, sick prisoners to re-offend and pose a risk to society. One example that the article talks about is a man named Bruce Harrison. Harrison is a retired veteran who was involved in a sting operation, he was arrested and sentenced to 49 years.
