The article explains several reasons in support of releasing older prisoners. The aging prison population is costing the taxpayers more money since a lot of the older inmates have health conditions that need to be treated. Many prisons are having to set up a geriatric ward just to hold the older inmates. The article argues that these inmates should be considered for early release since a lot of them are in prison for low level drug crimes and research has shown that it is substantially less likely for the old, sick prisoners to re-offend and pose a risk to society. One example that the article talks about is a man named Bruce Harrison. Harrison is a retired veteran who was involved in a sting operation, he was arrested and sentenced to 49 years. The jurors on the case said they would have found him not guilty if they knew that his sentence would be that long.
