-Gross domestic product (GDP) is the most widely reported measure throughout the world of a nation’s economic performance or the health of its economy. Through this article, we have a better understanding of the economy in China and the reasons for their GDP growth.
- According to the article, China's GDP grew by 6.8% in the first quarter of 2018, surpassing the estimated amount of 6.7% growth, based on the y-o-y growth.
- David Fernandez, the chief Asia Pacific economist at Barclays is speculating a depreciation of the GDP growth rate in China in the near future. Beijing is also cracking down on environmental pollution from the industry, as seen from how the March industrial output growth slowing to 6 percent from a year ago, compared to the 7.2 percent for the January through February period. Hence, it’s GDP will be expected to drop as there is less production. However, that does not reflect on the standard of living of the citizens' accurately as seen from how they would benefit from the cracking down of environmental pollution as it leads to an improvement in the living condition and standard of living of the citizens of China, thus making GDP an inaccurate indicator of the standard of living as it contradicts the belief that lower GDP would lead to a lower standard of living in the country.
- China's fixed asset investment growth is expected to decrease as times goes by. The GDP growth rate will rise, but as time goes on, the GDP growth rate will gradually slow down. China is trying to slow down its own GDP growth rate, so that the government can undergo economic restructuring in hopes that the economy would be able to grow steadily, and also to allow for the equal growth in the standard of living for all the income groups: the lower-class, middle-class, higher-class, thus allowing for the country to improve as a whole.
-Oxford Economic underestimates China's GDP growth, expecting them to reach a 6.4%, while Beijing expected a 6.5%. However China surpassed both expectations, obtaining an economic growth of 6.9% in 2017 despite facing financial risks in the midst of a government-led economic restructuring, mostly in part due to a synchronized global recovery, in which the world's biggest economies experienced economic growth.
-The trade barriers that US is going to impose will end up lowering the trade surplus with US. During the year 2017, China’s trade surplus with the US was $275.81 billion. It was recorded as the highest ever as it surpassed the previous record of $260.8 billion in 2015. After US have impose trade barriers between them and China, the amount of money received from exporting to the US will be significantly lower as according to the expenditure approach.[GDP=C+I+G+(E-I)] since net export drops, GDP will also decrease.
-China has been fighting debt for years as they try to balance economic stability against the potential fallout from any sharp deceleration.

-Unemployment is defined as those who are actively looking for work but are unable to find any. There are many types of unemployment such as cyclical unemployment, structural unemployment, frictional unemployment and seasonal unemployment. There will always be frictional, structural and seasonal unemployment, even when the economy is at full employment.

- Monthly figures depicting the number of jobless people via surveys has been disclosed in China in view of reviewing the actual employment situation in China. Many have seen eye to eye to this idea instead of having go through documents in order to find out the statistics like how it has been done previously.

- Since China reported that its unemployment rate is 4% but was supposed to be 11%, according to Feng Shuaizhang, this means that China has understated its own unemployment situation. China understated its unemployment rate to maintain its own reputation as one of the biggest economy in the world. The unemployment rate is also expected to be understated due to how it does not include discouraged workers, underemployed and part-time workers.

- There used to be a high unemployment of 20 million people due to the global financial crisis in 2008. The dean of the Institute for Economic and Social Research at Jinan University, Feng Shuai Zhang has stated that this new way of showing these statics has its good and bad points. He stated that the new measure is a big change for the country. and the new measure was more trustworthy than the previous one as the figures would be captured by authorized personnel, away from the involvement of the government.

- China states that the current unemployment rate is 5.1% in March of 2018, which meets the ideal rate of less than 5.5%

- The type of unemployment China is most worried about is structural unemployment. Structural unemployment is caused by mismatch of skills for the people out of work and the skills required for existing job opportunities, and is an unemployment that is long term and often caused by industrial changes instead of inflation. Industrial changes might include technological changes etc. It has been reported that structural unemployment will continue to exist as a problem in China due to ongoing capacity cuts, industrial upgrading of the manufacturing sector and the potential cooling down in construction

- Another type of unemployment China is facing is frictional unemployment. Frictional unemployment exists in a economy due to fresh graduates graduating their institutes of individuals shifting from one job to another, and these people will have to face an inevitable waiting time before being employed and do not stay employed for a very long time. However, this can result in a better match-up between workers and jobs, thus leading to the economy becoming more efficient.

GDP
I don't see much prelim analysis here.
Some suggestions/feedback especially for team to explore in REPORT:
1. Try to reduce specific data reporting on the GDP growth rate but to give just a concise portion on it and move on to analyzing the reasons accounting for the change, especially in your REPORT.
2. Why is China cracking down on pollution? How does high pollution impact the accuracy of GDP as an indicator of standard of living?
3. Why is the Government trying to undergo economic restructuring?
4. Some key points in the article not identified. Please re-read. One such key point would be "...synchronized global recovery." How does this impact China's GDP? Trade barriers that US is going to impose, how does that impact China's GDP?
5. Try using the expenditure approach of GDP to examine possible impact by different groups in the economy.

INFLATION
Aiyo...repeated this several times in class and lecture and stated in project timeline...Trading economics is NOT news article but datasheet. Only report data nothing much on the "Why it happened". Got to find out more from other sources.

Suggestions:
1. Good point about the targeted inflation rate being higher than current. Why is China concern about the lower rate? What do this figure reveal about the state of economy. Recalled what was shared in class.
2. Your point about inflation impacting exports and imports. Please explain the impact.
3. What caused the low inflation rate? Is it falling demand-pull or cost-push inflation? Find out more.

UNEMPLOYMENT
This article is pretty brief and hence limits your opportunity to apply economics concept. Nonetheless, let's try:
1. So if China's actual unemployment rate was supposed to be 11% but was reported as 4%, does this indicator overstate or understate the unemployment situation?
2. Find out the reasons for point 1.
3. Find out further, the current unemployment situation in China. Is the rate ideal or far from targeted rate?
4. What type of unemployment is most worrying in China? Is the government doing anything about it?

-Inflation is a sustained and continuous increase in the general (average) level of prices of goods and services in the economy. There are different types of inflation, such as, inflation, deflation, disinflation, stagflation and hyperinflation. When inflation is present, a dollar today can buy less than what a dollar could buy in the past. The value of a dollar can be observed in terms of its purchasing power, which is the real, tangible goods and intangible services that the dollar can buy. The value of a dollar (i.e. its purchasing power) does not stay constant when there is inflation.

- China’s consumer inflation rate in 2017 grew at a slow rate as compared to this year’s inflation rate.

- The CPI increased by 1.6% in 2017 which is far below the government’s target of 3%

- It was due to the 1.4% drop in food prices where pork and vegetables price dropped by 8%

- There was an increase in inflation rate of different aspects like non-food prices, medical products and services, housing-related, education, cultural and entertainment prices.

- Lian Ping, a chief economist says that the rising producer prices might push up the consumer price in the long term

- The latest monthly reading brought annual producer price growth for 2017 to 6.3 per cent, marking the fastest pace of annual inflation since 2007

- The statistics bureau said 6.13 percentage points of that annual rise was thanks to growth in the price of produced materials where oil, coal and natural gas are undergoing inflation.

- It was predicted that there might be stagflation in food prices but an increase in non-food prices

- The annual CPI rise of China will reach 2% in 2018

- With a low inflation level in China, the country can continue to deepen supply-side reform with a stronger focus on supply quality and economic rebalancing. It will also allow for the raise in the competitiveness of the economy and push forward high-quality development, which is believed to be rudimentary to determining the development path and the making of economic policies.
