The British were the first to attack early that morning and they strategized and succeeded in surrounding the Americans. In order to save his army, Washington made the call to order his army to retreat to Brooklyn Heights. Hundreds of men from Maryland held off the British so the rest of the army could retreat and many of them were killed in the process. On the dark, foggy night of August 29th the colonial army was able to silently retreat by crossing the East River to Manhattan. Howe strategized to surround the Americans during the battle. He did this by camping his troops on Staten Island, that way his troops could attack the American Army while British warships blocked the river. This trapped the Americans which inevitably helped Britain win the battle.
