In Hungary Santa Claus comes on 6 of December not at Christmas and his name is Nicholas (Mikulás in Hungarian) . In the evening of 5 December children clean their boots and put them in the window. By the next morning good children receive sweets, chocolate, candy and differentnuts in their boots and bad children receive a “virgács”. A virgács is often painted gold and is sold on the streets. Basically it can be simple twigs or branches from a bush tied together. St Nick travels on a sleigh pulled by deer, but he doesn’t come in through the chimney as he would end up in the stove and that is dangerous.

Saint Nicholas had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, a practice celebrated on hisfeast day, December 6.
