Rarely on oaks or chestnut trees (while in other countries it grows on peras, apples, poplars, shrubs).
Viscum Album is no more than a semi-porous, spiny, woody plant. It is semi-parasitic, because it grows on other trees, but it only absorbs juices and nutrients from the host. Its operation and development is regulated by itself so it normally produces chorophyll on its own.

The genus includes over two hundred kinds of parasitic plants, which do not produce chlorophyll at all, but germinate in the roots of other plants. The seeds can wait for the proper host for many years, invisible in the soil. When a root of a living plant is found near them, they wake up and spread a tentacle stuck on it and steals water and nutrients to grow.

Thought to have been brought to the country from Persia thousands of years ago, the kri-kri goat, described as a ‘feral domestic goat,’ is now considered native to Crete and can be found on three satellite islands offshore: Dia, Thodorou, and Agii Pantes. When it doesn’t find small prey, it feeds largely on fruits and nuts. Since it is not hunted for its fur anymore, a population increase has been recorded – even within small towns.

Golden Jackal vs Wolves

The jackal population status which recorded 7 main distribution areas in Greece, several local surveys have been undertaken mainly by the NGOs WWF Greece and Callisto. Cumulatively, the results of the different recent surveys show a general increase mainly in the distribution range of the golden jackal in the country during the last decade. Quite encouraging finally, was the fact of new jackal records in areas where it was considered locally extinct even 30 years ago. These recent studies provide strong evidence that the golden jackal will keep expanding its distribution throughout Greece, during the following years.
The jackal's competitors are the red fox and the wolf. Wolves dominate jackals, and jackals dominate foxes. In Europe, the range of wolves and jackals is mutually exclusive, with jackals abandoning their territory with the arrival of a wolf pack. In Europe, there are an estimated 12,000 wolves. The jackal's recent expansion throughout eastern and western Europe has been attributed to the extermination of the local wolf populations.
