14.-19. October 2024 eight students of Kanepi Gymnasium visited Greek school in Volos 2o Geniko Lykeio Neas-Ionias Magnisias.

Volos is a coastal city in Thessaly and major commercial port.

We were in the school for two days participating in the workshops on topic "Cultural integration" and "Climate change". On the first day we had a presentation from the Dutch students and a workshop about each of our country’s food culture. The presentations from Dutch students were about Netherlands flood control and a traditional dutch sweet named “Drop”. After the presentations we had a workshop on culinary dishes, where we were divided into mixed groups with at least one participant from each country. Each group had to create a menu with each of our country’s typical dishes. On the second day we had to present our menu to other students and teachers.

We followe our project theme: we were engaged , we explored, explained, elaborated and evaluated.

I think that all of our hosts were really nice and friendly. They can tend to be a little bit too loud sometimes which is kind of opposite of how estonians are but its okay. Pretty much everyone's host always packed us a lunch for the school or trip morning and when we were at their home then it felt like feeding other people was their love language. They have really good food there but for me some things felt a little undercooked like chicken or fries but they said that they do it like that always. We usually have a little “crispier” food. We went outside every night to get food or do something together. One evening we went bowling. But overall I think the host families were nice and treated us good.

On Wednesday we visited Meteora mountains which is a rock formation in Trikala. There are Eastern Orthodox monasteries, 24 of them from 14th century. The Meteora complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 because of its outstanding architecture and beauty, combined with religious andcultural significance.

We visited two monasteries. In both we had a guided tour and heard about their backstories and learned about the icons and religious wall art. After visits we went to Trikala city to look around and eat. On Thursday we visited two mountain villages: Makrinitsa and Portaria. We had a guide on the bus who talked about a small chapel in the first village.

Our study visits were prepared in the mixed groups on previous day and we actively worked on worksheets and later feedback.

We left our host families early in the morning (6:45am) and had about a three hour trip to Athens. First we went to Acropolis Hill and after that to Acropolis museum. At both places we had a guide who talked to us about the history of Greece and the gods etc. The view from the hill was very pretty and all the statues and other things in the museum were really interesting and beautiful. After that, we walked through the neighbourhood of Plaka to Monastiraki Square. We had a little bit of free time to take ice cream or grab a snack. After that we were taken to our hostel. Later at night all the students went outside to eat and buy some souvenirs. The food was really good. Then we headed back to the hostel and packed our last things and went to sleep.
