Gay World was one of three amusement parks built in Singapore before World War II. The other two amusement parks were “New World” from early 1930-1978 and “Great World” from early 1923 to 1987. Before the days of television and shopping malls, Singaporeans of all ages and from all walks of life sought out thrills provided by these amusement parks. Gay World,also known as Happy World, was located between Mountbatten and Geylang roads, officially opened in May 1937. The founder was George Lee Geok Eng of George Lee Motors. Happy World catered mainly to families with children, it was a leisure hangout place for teenagers, providing affordable entertainment fees to everyone,even youths.

During the war, the Japanese turned all the Worlds into gambling farms, encouraging Chinese businessmen, such as the Shaw Brothers, to operate gambling dens at the amusement parks. As these dens were precluded from raids, the bright lights at the Worlds continued to attract many gamblers and the dens were often crowded. The popularity of the gambling dens helped the Japanese profit substantially from the revenue collected from tax and licence fees of the gambling dens. The Japanese were not allowed in the gambling dens, but they could patronise the cabarets and nightclubs. When rumours about the Japanese surrender were rife in August 1945, the gambling stalls in all the Worlds closed down.

Every morning in school, students would have to sing Britain's national anthem ‘How God Save The Queen’.

This source shows students of an English school - mostly British people. Schools before the Japanese Occupation depends on what language school they went and also depends on their race - Malay school teaches in Malay language and so on.

After taking over Singapore, the Japanese established the Shonan Japanese School to educate Malays, Chinese, Indians, and Eurasians in the Japanese language.
In Syonan, they focused on teaching of the Japanese language and cultures. They started teaching the lessons through the propaganda paper, the Syonan Times. They took over the local English paper, The Straits Times, and renamed it Syonan Times. They published a daily column of Nippon-go lessons, which taught the readers basic Japanese greetings and how to count. The Syonan Radio also broadcasted Japanese lessons daily. Libraries were stocked with books on Japan and its language, culture. 
Instead of singing Britain’s national anthem, students every morning will have to singthe Japanese national anthem Kimigayo.
There was a lack of Japanese teachers and textbooks, the Japanese were forced to allow a combination of the Japanese and English languages until the arrival of the first Japanese textbook in Singapore. 

Before the Japanese Occupation at around 1934-1938, girls during their teenage years would become a samsui woman to earn money for their families. Most of these samsui women would go on to work as general labourers in the construction industry, and many would come to be characterised by the distinctive red headgear and blue or black samfoo they wore while taking on backbreaking work at construction sites across the island.A typical day of a samsui woman began at the break of dawn where they would have a simple meal before gathering to walk over to their respective construction sites. By 8am, they would be hard at work carrying debris and other construction materials in buckets that hung from shoulder poles. Work usually ended at around 6pm, after which many samsui women would gather together at the five-foot ways for a simple meal to end the day.

.During the Japanese Occupation, there was very little rations for the locals to survive on. Hence, to support their families and younger siblings, teenagers had to give up on their childhood and start working for survival. They worked as soil diggers, blisters and calluses formed on their hands from digging the soil and carrying hoes. It was really painful but they did not have any money to buy gloves to protect their hands. Most of the locals planted cheap and nutritious sweet potatoes and tapioca plants in their backyard as alternatives to the much-preferred white rice to supplement their diets. 

It means that Singaporean are having no problems to face before Japanese occupation and their food consumption are not being controlled. Thus, teenagers had plenty of food and were taken good care of as they are provided with good source of food from their parents. Singapore had many food stalls around and the food were also affordable for the teenagers. Thus, they did not suffer from hunger nor diseases and did not need to rely on specific food for nutrients in growth. In conclusion, teenagers health was not affected due to the goods they have back then.

Due to the cramped and unsanitary conditions and lack of food, many teenagers contracted illnesses like malaria, cholera and suffered from malnutrition. Since there was little medication to treat them, many lost their lives. The more fortunate ones did not die but was having a tough time to survive through the Japanese occupation as the buildings and schools and everything was destroyed and they have nowhere to live. They have lack of supply of food and only had mostly porridge, sweet potatoes and tapioca to fill up their stomach. The lack of nutrients cause several health problems and lack of food cause them to be scrawny to the point where their bones were also visible. This shows how terrible their life was to survive in that condition even with war happening.
