The German soldiers makes the jews in the camp that the author and his dad are in evacuate to other camps. However, they were forced to run without any breaks, without food, and if they even considered stopping for even a second, they would get shot dead. In page 85, paragraph 4-5, it states, “They had orders to shoot anyone who could not sustain the pace. Their fingers on the triggers, they did not deprive themselves of the pleasure. If one of us stopped for a second, a quick shot eliminated the filthy dog. I was putting one foot in front of the other, like a machine.” which emphasizes how the German soldiers did not see them as people, but more like dogs. This is a very clear unjust treatment of anyone. Making people run with the threat of death, without any food in the snow and strong, cold wind, is a complete violation of Article 5 of the UDHR Articles.

The Uyghurs have their own language, are are predominantly Muslim, while some are from other ethnic and and religious minority groups. There is evidence that shows that Uyghurs are being used for labor work, and being tortured. The women are being forcibly sterilized, and some are being sexually abused. They also have re-learning camps, where they detain Uyghurs against their will. The US and many other countries have accused China of committing genocide, but China denies all of these accusations. They claim that the system of the re-education camps are there to fight against separatism and Islamist militancy. The China Cables, which are leaked documents, showed how the camps were intended to be run as highly strict prisons, instead of what China claims they are for. The claims of genocide come from the forced sterilization of the Uyghur population. Wiesel, and researching about the Chinese genocide of the Uyghers, is that there are always going to be cruel people in the world. While we cant stop bad things from happening, we can try out best to educate and speak out, and prevent these types of scenarios. The amount of pain and suffering these people go through due to the ignorance and apathy of others is truly heart breaking. The horrors they must have seen and experienced, and now have to live with for the rest of their lives. I don’t understand how we let these things happen in the 21st century. Indifference really is a horrible thing, and we need to actively work against it.
