After being presented to King William IV, Queen Adelaide, and their court, a man named Charles Babbage tried to charm Ada's mother. This didn't end up working out, but Ada was amazed by his inventions, which included a speedometer, and many other things. This is when Ada learned about a machine called the "Difference Engine" which is basically just an old time calculator. This sparked Ada's interest, and they would continue writing to each other. This would end up changing the course of her life.
